Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Program, set up, and operate Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) using industry-standard software (e.g., PC-DMIS, Calypso, QUINDOS) to perform complex dimensional inspections.
  • Perform detailed First Article Inspections (FAI), in-process checks, and final product verifications to ensure full compliance with design specifications.
  • Interpret complex engineering drawings, 3D CAD models, and technical specifications, applying an expert-level understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Utilize a wide array of precision measurement instruments, including laser trackers, 3D scanners, vision systems, optical comparators, surface profilometers, and various hand tools.
  • Conduct comprehensive calibration, verification, and maintenance of measurement equipment, fixtures, and master gauges in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025 and internal standards.
  • Generate, analyze, and present clear, concise inspection reports that document dimensional results, part conformity, deviations, and non-conformances.
  • Lead root cause analysis investigations for dimensional discrepancies, collaborating directly with engineering and manufacturing teams to implement effective corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
  • Develop, optimize, and validate new CMM inspection programs for New Product Introduction (NPI) projects, ensuring robust and repeatable measurement strategies.
  • Design and execute Measurement System Analysis (MSA) studies, such as Gauge Repeatability & Reproducibility (GR&R), to qualify and monitor the performance of measurement systems.
  • Provide real-time dimensional feedback and technical support to production teams, enabling process control and immediate adjustments to maintain quality.
  • Manage and maintain all inspection records and calibration data within the organization's Quality Management System (QMS), ensuring audit readiness.
  • Train and mentor junior technicians, inspectors, and manufacturing personnel on the proper use of metrology equipment and the interpretation of dimensional data.

Secondary Functions

  • Participate in Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and inspection feasibility reviews, providing critical feedback on part tolerancing and measurement strategies.
  • Support supplier quality initiatives by performing incoming inspections on critical components and validating supplier-provided dimensional reports.
  • Act as a subject matter expert during internal and external quality audits (e.g., ISO 9001, AS9100), demonstrating metrology processes and providing necessary documentation.
  • Drive continuous improvement projects within the metrology lab and quality department to enhance efficiency, reduce inspection cycle times, and improve measurement accuracy.
  • Assist in the design, procurement, and qualification of custom inspection fixtures, gauges, and tooling to support new and existing products.
  • Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), work instructions, and training materials for all metrology-related activities.
  • Perform reverse engineering of components by capturing precise dimensional data using 3D scanning or CMM probing techniques.
  • Liaise with and manage external calibration service providers for specialized equipment, ensuring timely and compliant service.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • CMM Programming: Expert proficiency in programming and operating Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) with software such as PC-DMIS, Zeiss Calypso, or Mitutoyo MCOSMOS.
  • GD&T Expertise: Advanced knowledge and practical application of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) based on ASME Y14.5 standards.
  • Metrology Equipment Operation: Hands-on skill in using a broad range of metrology tools, including laser trackers, vision systems, optical comparators, surface testers, and precision hand tools.
  • Blueprint & CAD Interpretation: Ability to fluently read and interpret complex mechanical drawings, technical specifications, and 3D CAD models (SolidWorks, CATIA, etc.).
  • Statistical Analysis: Experience with Statistical Process Control (SPC) and conducting Measurement System Analysis (MSA) and Gauge R&R studies.
  • Quality Systems Knowledge: Familiarity with quality management systems and industry standards like ISO 9001, AS9100, and ISO 13485.
  • Technical Reporting: Proficiency in creating detailed, data-driven inspection reports using MS Office (especially Excel) and specialized quality software.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • Documented certification in CMM programming (e.g., PC-DMIS Level 2/3) and GD&T (e.g., ASME Senior Level).
