Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Actively participate in the complete lifecycle of industrial equipment, including the installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, repair, and ongoing maintenance of machinery under the guidance of a journeyman.
  • Develop proficiency in interpreting complex technical documents, including mechanical blueprints, schematic diagrams, and service manuals, to determine work procedures and assembly instructions.
  • Execute scheduled preventative and predictive maintenance tasks on a wide array of mechanical systems to proactively identify potential failures and extend equipment lifespan.
  • Learn and apply safe operating procedures for various hoisting and lifting equipment, such as cranes, jacks, and forklifts, to position machinery and parts during installation and repair.
  • Systematically troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic system malfunctions by observing equipment in operation and utilizing precision measuring and testing instruments.
  • Master the use of precision tools like levels, micrometers, and alignment lasers to accurately align and balance new or repaired equipment to manufacturer specifications.
  • Gain experience in basic fabrication techniques, including welding, cutting, and grinding, to create or modify components required for repairs and installations.
  • Adhere strictly to all company and industry safety protocols, including Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO) procedures, to maintain a safe and hazard-free work environment at all times.
  • Maintain meticulous records of all maintenance activities, parts usage, and repair details within the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) for future reference and analysis.
  • Develop foundational skills in operating machine shop tools like lathes, milling machines, and grinders to fabricate or recondition parts to precise dimensional specifications.
  • Assist in the assembly and installation of complex mechanical systems, including conveyors, gearboxes, pumps, and production lines, utilizing a full range of hand and power tools.
  • Participate in the systematic dismantling of machinery and equipment for repair, replacement, or relocation, ensuring all components are handled and stored correctly.
  • Learn and perform proper rigging techniques to safely move heavy machinery and components, including selecting appropriate slings, shackles, and chains and inspecting them for safety.
  • Conduct regular inspections and operational tests on machinery to detect early signs of irregularities, wear, and potential malfunctions before they escalate into major issues.
  • Perform essential routine maintenance tasks, including cleaning and lubricating shafts, bearings, gears, and other mechanical parts to ensure smooth and efficient operation.
  • Identify, remove, and replace defective or worn-out parts, such as bearings, seals, gears, and belts, on a variety of industrial machines.

  • Support the maintenance team during unplanned equipment breakdowns and emergency maintenance situations to help restore production as quickly and safely as possible.
  • Uphold high standards of housekeeping by maintaining a clean, organized, and safe personal work area, including tool storage and parts management.
  • Collaborate effectively with a diverse team of maintenance professionals, engineers, and production operators to coordinate repair schedules and minimize operational disruptions.
  • Diligently engage in all aspects of the apprenticeship program, including completing required classroom instruction and hands-on training modules to track progress towards journeyman certification.
  • Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement by suggesting potential enhancements to maintenance procedures, equipment reliability, or workplace safety.
  • Assist in managing inventory of spare parts, tools, and supplies, ensuring necessary components are available for planned and unplanned work.
