Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute comprehensive diagnostics and troubleshooting on complex mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems for large-scale mining equipment like haul trucks, excavators, loaders, and dozers.
  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance (PM) services on the mobile equipment fleet, diligently following manufacturer specifications and site procedures to maximize machine availability.
  • Conduct major overhauls and component change-outs on engines, transmissions, final drives, differentials, and large hydraulic cylinders with precision and care.
  • Skillfully utilize OEM diagnostic software and tooling (e.g., Caterpillar ET, Komatsu VHMS, John Deere Service Advisor) to identify faults, interpret error codes, and calibrate systems.
  • Read and interpret complex technical manuals, hydraulic and electrical schematics, and engineering blueprints to guide repair strategies and ensure accuracy.
  • Perform advanced welding (SMAW, GMAW) and fabrication tasks to repair structural damage, hard-face wear components, or modify equipment as per engineering-approved designs.
  • Uphold and champion a culture of safety by ensuring all work performed strictly adheres to company policies and governing regulations (MSHA/OSHA).
  • Meticulously complete detailed work orders, service reports, and parts requisitions using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) like SAP or JDE.
  • Operate and inspect a wide range of heavy machinery to diagnose defects, verify repairs, and ensure operational readiness before returning to production.
  • Effectively requisition necessary parts and supplies from the warehouse, maintaining accountability for inventory used on assigned jobs.
  • Act as a mentor, providing guidance, on-the-job training, and technical support to apprentice mechanics and junior members of the team.
  • Conduct thorough pre-shift and post-shift inspections on equipment to proactively identify potential issues before they escalate into major failures.
  • Respond with urgency to emergency breakdown calls in the field, demonstrating the ability to work effectively under pressure and in challenging environmental conditions.
  • Maintain a high standard of housekeeping, ensuring a clean and organized work environment in shop bays, field service trucks, and job sites.
  • Test repaired equipment for proper performance, ensuring all work meets or exceeds manufacturer specifications and operational standards.
  • Participate actively in Root Cause Analysis (RCA) investigations for recurring equipment failures to help develop long-term solutions and improve maintenance strategies.
  • Maintain and repair essential mine support equipment, including water trucks, service trucks, cranes, and various light-duty vehicles.
  • Complete and document pre-task risk assessments such as Job Safety Analyses (JSAs) before commencing any maintenance activity.
  • Manage and dispose of used oils, coolants, and other waste materials in strict accordance with environmental policies and regulations.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with equipment operators and production supervisors regarding equipment status, expected repair timelines, and potential operational impacts.

Secondary Functions

  • Participate in daily toolbox talks and safety meetings to stay informed of site hazards and operational changes.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of maintenance procedures, work instructions, and safety protocols.
  • Assist maintenance planners by providing expert feedback on job scopes, estimated task durations, and required parts lists.
  • Support reliability engineering initiatives by collecting data and providing insights on equipment condition and failure modes.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Deep proficiency in diagnosing and repairing heavy-duty diesel engines (e.g., Caterpillar, Cummins, MTU/Detroit).
  • Strong command of complex mobile hydraulic systems, including troubleshooting pumps, motors, valves, and accumulators.
  • Expertise in diagnosing and repairing 12/24V electrical systems, including CAN bus networks and electronic control modules (ECMs).
  • Competency in using a range of OEM and generic diagnostic software and laptops for troubleshooting and system calibration.
  • Proven ability to read and interpret complex hydraulic and electrical schematics and blueprints.
  • Advanced welding and fabrication skills, including Stick (SMAW) and MIG (GMAW), and use of oxy-acetylene torches.
  • In-depth knowledge of powertrain components, including transmissions, torque converters, differentials, and planetary final drives.
  • Familiarity with maintaining and repairing air conditioning (A/C) and HVAC systems on heavy equipment.
  • Experience using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) for work order management and time entry.
  • Proficient in safe rigging and lifting procedures for handling heavy components weighing several tons.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Completion of a recognized Heavy Duty Mechanic Apprenticeship Program or equivalent military training.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's Degree or Technical Diploma in Diesel Technology, Heavy Equipment Mechanics, or a related industrial field.

Experience Requirements
