Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Supervise a team of 3D modeling artists, providing clear artistic and technical direction, mentorship, and constructive feedback to elevate the quality of their work.
  • Establish and maintain the technical and aesthetic standards for all 3D models, ensuring they align with the Art Director's vision and are optimized for downstream departments like rigging, texturing, and lighting.
  • Oversee the day-to-day allocation of tasks, managing team schedules and priorities to ensure all production deadlines are met without compromising quality.
  • Conduct regular reviews of all models at various stages of completion (e.g., block-out, high-poly sculpt, final topology), providing detailed notes for revisions.
  • Collaborate closely with Concept Artists and the Art Director to interpret 2D designs into 3D forms, troubleshooting any creative or technical challenges that arise during this translation.
  • Partner with the Rigging and Animation departments to guarantee that models have clean topology, proper edge flow, and are suitable for deformation and performance requirements.
  • Develop, document, and implement efficient modeling workflows, best practices, and pipeline standards for the entire team to follow.
  • Manage the departmental budget and resources, making informed decisions about software, hardware, and external asset needs.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for all matters related to the modeling department, communicating team progress, challenges, and needs to the Production Manager and VFX Supervisor.
  • Troubleshoot complex technical issues within the modeling pipeline, guiding the team to effective and efficient solutions.
  • Evaluate and approve final models for delivery, ensuring they pass all quality control checks and meet project specifications.
  • Lead daily rounds and team meetings to track progress, address roadblocks, and foster a collaborative and positive team environment.
  • Actively participate in the recruitment, interviewing, and selection process for new modeling talent.
  • Define the technical specifications for character, prop, and environment models based on project constraints, including poly-count, texture resolution, and UV layout standards.
  • Ensure all assets are properly named, organized, and archived according to established studio protocols for efficient data management.
  • Provide mentorship and training to junior and mid-level artists, fostering their professional growth and skill development within the team.
  • Research and evaluate new tools, software, and techniques to enhance the capabilities and efficiency of the modeling pipeline.
  • Work with the production team to accurately bid and schedule modeling tasks for upcoming projects or sequences.
  • Liaise with the Surfacing/Texturing department to ensure models are prepared with optimal UV layouts for efficient texturing workflows.
  • Interpret and execute complex director-level notes, translating high-level creative feedback into actionable tasks for the modeling team.

Secondary Functions

  • Support other departments by providing proxy or temporary models to facilitate concurrent workflows.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of the studio's digital asset library.
  • Collaborate with the R&D department to request and test new proprietary tools that can improve modeling efficiency.
  • Prepare and present departmental updates, progress reports, and workflow proposals to studio leadership.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Expert-Level 3D Modeling: Mastery of industry-standard software such as Autodesk Maya and Pixologic ZBrush for creating complex organic and hard-surface models.
  • Advanced Sculpting & Topology: A deep understanding of digital sculpting techniques and the ability to create clean, efficient, and deformation-friendly topology.
  • UV Mapping Mastery: Proficiency in creating optimized and non-overlapping UV layouts for high-quality texturing and rendering.
  • Pipeline Integration: Thorough knowledge of how modeling integrates with other departments, including rigging, animation, texturing, and lighting.
  • Scripting & Automation: Basic proficiency in Python or MEL scripting to create tools and automate repetitive tasks is highly desirable.
  • Asset Management: Experience with asset management systems like ShotGrid (formerly Shotgun) for tracking and versioning assets throughout the production pipeline.
  • Rendering & Shading Knowledge: A solid understanding of rendering concepts and familiarity with renderers like Arnold, V-Ray, or Renderman to check and prepare models.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field or equivalent, demonstrable professional experience supported by a strong portfolio.

Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Fine Arts, Computer Animation, or Digital Media.
