Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Perform complex, high-complexity molecular diagnostic assays, including nucleic acid extraction (DNA/RNA) from a diverse range of clinical specimens like blood, tissue, saliva, and other bodily fluids.
- Execute a wide variety of molecular techniques with precision, such as Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR), reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR), and fragment analysis.
- Operate, calibrate, and maintain sophisticated laboratory instrumentation, including automated nucleic acid extractors, thermal cyclers, real-time PCR systems, and genetic sequencing platforms.
- Meticulously prepare and qualify all necessary reagents, controls, and calibrators according to established standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure the integrity and accuracy of every test run.
- Analyze, interpret, and critically evaluate raw molecular data, confidently identifying and troubleshooting any deviations, artifacts, or atypical results to ensure validity.
- Accurately and contemporaneously document all procedural steps, QC results, maintenance activities, and patient results within the Laboratory Information System (LIS) in a compliant and timely manner.
- Ensure strict and unwavering adherence to all quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) protocols, including the successful execution of daily controls and participation in proficiency testing programs (e.g., CAP surveys).
- Perform and document all routine and preventative maintenance on laboratory equipment, troubleshooting instrument errors and coordinating with service engineers for repairs as needed.
- Actively participate in the evaluation, validation, and implementation of new molecular assays, laboratory-developed tests (LDTs), and innovative technologies under the guidance of senior staff or a laboratory director.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment by strictly following all institutional safety, infection control, and chemical hygiene policies for handling biohazardous materials.
- Efficiently manage laboratory inventory by monitoring supply levels, forecasting needs, ordering reagents and consumables, and ensuring proper receipt and storage conditions are met.
- Review, verify, and release patient results with an exceptional degree of accuracy, ensuring all critical values are communicated promptly to clinical staff according to established laboratory policy.
- Assist in the training and orientation of new employees, students, and pathology residents on laboratory procedures, complex instrumentation, and safety protocols.
- Independently troubleshoot assay failures and instrument malfunctions, performing initial corrective actions and escalating complex or unresolved issues to senior technologists or supervisors.
- Operate and help maintain Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) workflows, which may include library preparation, operation of sequencing instruments, and performing initial data quality assessment.
- Correlate molecular findings with patient clinical history, pathology reports, and other laboratory results to provide a comprehensive and clinically relevant interpretation.
- Uphold all regulatory requirements from agencies such as CAP, CLIA, and state health departments, and actively participate in lab preparations for inspections and audits.
- Perform nucleic acid quantification and quality assessment using various techniques like UV-Vis spectrophotometry (e.g., NanoDrop) or fluorometry (e.g., Qubit).
- Review and contribute to the revision of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to reflect current practices, new technologies, or changes in regulatory guidelines.
- Apply a deep understanding of the principles behind molecular-based testing for diverse areas such as oncology, pharmacogenomics, human genetics, and infectious diseases.
