Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Performs complex, high-quality diagnostic Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) procedures on patients of all ages in accordance with established departmental protocols and physician orders.
  • Meticulously screens all patients, staff, and visitors for MRI safety prior to entering the magnetic field, thoroughly reviewing screening forms and verbally confirming the absence of contraindications like pacemakers, metallic implants, or prior injuries involving metal.
  • Positions, explains the procedure to, and comforts patients to reduce anxiety and ensure their cooperation, utilizing immobilization devices and communication techniques to achieve optimal imaging results.
  • Selects and operates sophisticated MRI equipment, choosing appropriate pulse sequences, technical parameters, and radiofrequency coils tailored to the specific anatomical area and clinical question.
  • Administers intravenous contrast media (gadolinium-based agents) as prescribed by a radiologist, performing venipuncture and monitoring the patient for any signs of adverse reaction.
  • Evaluates the technical quality of captured images, ensuring they meet diagnostic standards and repeating sequences as necessary to provide the radiologist with comprehensive information.
  • Maintains a deep understanding of human cross-sectional anatomy, physiology, and pathology to identify and capture clinically relevant imaging findings.
  • Archives images to the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) and accurately enters all required patient data and procedural information into the Radiology Information System (RIS).
  • Strictly adheres to all radiation safety and magnetic field safety principles (ALARA), ensuring a safe environment for patients, oneself, and other healthcare personnel.
  • Performs and documents daily, weekly, and monthly quality control (QC) procedures on the MRI scanner and associated equipment to ensure optimal performance and compliance with ACR guidelines.
  • Responds effectively to medical emergencies and contrast reactions, initiating life support measures and summoning appropriate medical assistance when required.
  • Collaborates directly with radiologists to modify and tailor imaging protocols in real-time based on initial findings or specific clinical needs.
  • Manages patient workflow efficiently, prioritizing emergent and urgent cases while maintaining a schedule to minimize patient wait times.
  • Maintains accurate and confidential patient records, ensuring all documentation is complete, compliant with HIPAA, and entered into the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Troubleshoots basic equipment malfunctions and software issues, reporting any persistent or complex problems to the service engineer or department leadership.
  • Educates and mentors MRI students and new technologists, providing guidance on scanning techniques, patient safety, and departmental policies.
  • Assists in the management of inventory for MRI-specific supplies, including contrast agents, IV start kits, and patient comfort items, ensuring availability for uninterrupted service.
  • Prepares and maintains the MRI scan room, ensuring it is clean, well-stocked, and prepared for the next patient.
  • Participates in departmental staff meetings and continuous education programs to stay current with advancements in MRI technology, safety standards, and clinical applications.
  • Contributes to achieving departmental goals for patient satisfaction by providing exceptional, empathetic care and maintaining a professional demeanor at all times.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • MRI System Operation: Proficiency with major MRI platforms (e.g., Siemens, GE, Philips, Canon).
  • Venipuncture & IV Contrast Administration: Skillful in establishing IV access and safely administering contrast agents.
  • Cross-Sectional Anatomy: In-depth knowledge of human anatomy as visualized in MRI.
  • MRI Safety Protocols: Expertise in patient screening and managing the high-field magnetic environment.
  • PACS & RIS Proficiency: Competence in using Picture Archiving and Communication Systems and Radiology Information Systems.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Graduate of an ARRT-recognized accredited program in Radiologic Technology or Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
  • Current certification and registration by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (ARRT, MR).
  • State licensure where applicable.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Radiologic Science or a related healthcare field.

Experience Requirements
