Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Design, install, configure, and support the organization’s local area network (LAN), wide area network (WAN), and wireless network (WLAN) infrastructure across multiple sites.
- Perform daily monitoring and health checks of network performance, integrity, and availability, identifying and resolving bottlenecks before they impact business operations.
- Manage and maintain network hardware and software, including routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, and VPN concentrators from vendors like Cisco, Juniper, and Palo Alto.
- Implement and enforce robust network security policies and procedures, including access control lists (ACLs), firewall rule management, and intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS).
- Conduct regular security audits and vulnerability assessments on network devices and infrastructure to ensure compliance with industry standards like NIST and internal security policies.
- Provide Tier 2 and Tier 3 technical support for all network-related incidents and service requests, performing deep-dive troubleshooting for complex connectivity and performance issues.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation for network architecture, device configurations, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and disaster recovery plans.
- Plan and execute network upgrades, firmware updates, and equipment refresh cycles with minimal disruption to business services, including after-hours and weekend change windows.
- Administer and optimize dynamic network routing protocols such as BGP, OSPF, and EIGRP to ensure efficient, redundant, and resilient data traffic flow.
- Configure and manage core network services including DNS, DHCP, and NTP to ensure reliable and consistent network operations for all endpoints and servers.
- Collaborate closely with Systems, Security, and Application teams to integrate network solutions with other IT infrastructure components and strategic projects.
- Monitor and analyze network traffic patterns using tools like Wireshark, SolarWinds, or PRTG to proactively identify performance issues and inform capacity planning.
- Manage network authentication and authorization systems, including RADIUS and TACACS+, to secure administrative access to all network devices.
- Oversee the setup and maintenance of site-to-site and remote access VPNs, ensuring secure and reliable connectivity for remote employees, partners, and branch offices.
- Evaluate, test, and recommend new network technologies and solutions to enhance performance, security, scalability, and overall business value.
- Participate actively in the organization's disaster recovery and business continuity planning, ensuring network resiliency and failover capabilities are regularly tested and maintained.
- Manage relationships with telecommunications carriers and hardware vendors, overseeing service procurement, service level agreements (SLAs), and support contract renewals.
- Create and maintain detailed network topology diagrams and asset inventories using tools like Microsoft Visio or Lucidchart.
- Automate repetitive network administration tasks and configuration deployments using scripting languages such as Python, PowerShell, or Ansible playbooks.
- Respond to and resolve network outages and emergencies as part of an on-call rotation, performing detailed root cause analysis (RCA) to prevent future occurrences.
- Ensure the physical security and environmental stability of network closets and data centers, including structured cabling, power distribution, and cooling systems.
- Lead small to medium-sized network projects from conception to completion, including requirements gathering, planning, resource allocation, and stakeholder communication.
