Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Proactively monitor the health, performance, and security of the global network infrastructure, including LAN, WAN, wireless, and data center networks, using enterprise-grade monitoring tools (e.g., SolarWinds, Nagios, Datadog).
  • Act as the first point of contact for all network-related incidents, creating and managing tickets in systems like ServiceNow or Jira from detection through to resolution.
  • Perform initial triage and in-depth troubleshooting of network outages and performance degradations, including issues with routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, and wireless access points.
  • Analyze network traffic patterns using tools like Wireshark and NetFlow to identify anomalies, diagnose complex connectivity problems, and pinpoint sources of latency.
  • Execute established incident management protocols, ensuring timely escalation of unresolved issues to Tier 2/3 Network Engineers, other IT teams, or external vendors.
  • Provide clear, concise, and timely communication regarding incident status, impact, and resolution progress to stakeholders, management, and affected user groups.
  • Implement pre-approved, standard network changes and configurations during scheduled maintenance windows, following strict change management procedures.
  • Perform daily, weekly, and monthly system checks to ensure the optimal operation of all network components and services.
  • Respond to and resolve alerts from various monitoring systems, correlating events to identify root causes rather than just treating symptoms.
  • Manage and maintain the health of network hardware from vendors such as Cisco, Juniper, Arista, and Palo Alto Networks.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to core networking protocols, including TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, and Spanning Tree.
  • Assist in the documentation of network diagrams, procedures, and runbooks to build a comprehensive knowledge base for the NOC team.
  • Participate in a rotating shift schedule to provide 24/7/365 coverage for the Network Operations Center.
  • Conduct root cause analysis (RCA) for major incidents, documenting findings and proposing preventative measures to avoid future occurrences.
  • Collaborate with telecommunication providers and third-party vendors to troubleshoot and resolve circuit-related issues and service disruptions.
  • Verify and test network redundancy and failover mechanisms to ensure business continuity and disaster recovery readiness.
  • Support the deployment of new network hardware and infrastructure under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Monitor and manage DNS, DHCP, and IPAM (DDI) services to ensure their availability and proper functioning.
  • Generate and review regular reports on network performance, availability, and incident trends to identify areas for improvement.
  • Uphold and enforce network security policies by monitoring for unauthorized access, security threats, and policy violations in coordination with the security team.
  • Isolate and resolve network-based VoIP and video conferencing quality issues, such as jitter, packet loss, and latency.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Network Protocols: Deep understanding of the OSI model and core protocols such as TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, and STP.
  • Hardware Proficiency: Hands-on experience with enterprise-grade networking hardware from vendors like Cisco (IOS/NX-OS), Juniper (Junos), Arista, and Palo Alto Networks.
  • Monitoring Tools: Expertise in using network monitoring systems like SolarWinds, Nagios, PRTG, Datadog, or Zabbix for performance analysis and alerting.
  • Troubleshooting Tools: Proficiency with packet capture and analysis tools (e.g., Wireshark, tcpdump) and traffic analysis tools (e.g., NetFlow, sFlow).
  • Ticketing Systems: Experience with IT Service Management (ITSM) platforms such as ServiceNow, Jira, or Remedy for incident and change management.
  • Operating Systems: Familiarity with both Windows and Linux/Unix command-line interfaces for server-side troubleshooting.
  • WAN Technologies: Knowledge of various WAN technologies including MPLS, SD-WAN, and VPN (IPSec/SSL).
  • Scripting: Basic scripting ability in Python, PowerShell, or Bash for automating routine tasks is highly desirable.
  • Security Concepts: Foundational knowledge of network security principles, including firewalls, ACLs, VPNs, and intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS).
  • Cloud Networking: Familiarity with networking concepts in cloud environments like AWS (VPC, Security Groups) or Azure (VNet).

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Associate's degree in a technical field or equivalent relevant work experience. Industry certifications (e.g., CompTIA Network+, CCNA) can substitute for a degree.

Preferred Education:

Bachelor's degree in a relevant field of study. Certifications such as Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) or Juniper JNCIA-Junos are highly preferred.
