Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Provide direct leadership, mentorship, and professional development to a team of Network Operations Engineers, fostering a culture of high performance and continuous improvement.
  • Oversee the 24/7 proactive monitoring of all network infrastructure, including routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, and wireless controllers, to ensure optimal performance and availability.
  • Act as the primary point of technical escalation for the NOC team, providing expert-level troubleshooting and guidance for complex and high-priority network incidents.
  • Develop, document, and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs), runbooks, and knowledge base articles to ensure consistent and effective incident response.
  • Manage the incident management lifecycle, from initial detection and triage to resolution and post-mortem analysis, ensuring timely communication to stakeholders.
  • Lead major incident response (P1/P2) calls, coordinating efforts across multiple IT teams to drive rapid service restoration.
  • Generate and present regular operational reports on network performance, system uptime, mean time to resolution (MTTR), and team productivity to IT leadership.
  • Manage team scheduling, including shift rotations and on-call rosters, to ensure adequate coverage and operational readiness at all times.
  • Drive the continuous improvement of network monitoring and alerting systems (e.g., SolarWinds, Nagios, PRTG, Datadog) to enhance proactive detection and reduce false positives.
  • Ensure strict adherence to established Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for incident response and resolution.
  • Conduct and lead post-incident reviews (PIRs) to identify root causes, document lessons learned, and implement preventative measures to avoid future occurrences.
  • Coordinate and oversee planned network maintenance activities, change requests, and configuration updates in accordance with ITIL change management processes.
  • Facilitate the onboarding and training of new NOC team members on technical systems, tools, and operational procedures.
  • Perform regular analysis of network capacity and performance trends to assist with capacity planning and identify future infrastructure needs.
  • Manage relationships with third-party vendors and service providers, escalating issues with carriers (ISPs), and hardware/software suppliers as necessary.
  • Champion automation initiatives within the NOC by identifying repetitive tasks and collaborating with engineering teams to develop scripts and automated solutions.
  • Perform hands-on configuration, troubleshooting, and administration of advanced network hardware and software when required during critical events.
  • Uphold and enforce security policies and procedures within the network environment, collaborating with the cybersecurity team on vulnerability management and threat response.
  • Serve as a key liaison between the Network Operations team and other departments, including Systems Engineering, Cybersecurity, and Application Support.
  • Evaluate and recommend new tools, technologies, and processes to enhance the capabilities and efficiency of the Network Operations Center.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced Routing & Switching: Expert-level knowledge of routing protocols (BGP, OSPF, EIGRP) and switching technologies (VLANs, STP, LACP) in a multi-vendor environment (Cisco, Arista, Juniper).
  • Firewall & Security Management: Deep experience with next-generation firewalls (Palo Alto, Fortinet, Cisco ASA), including policy administration, VPNs, and NAT.
  • Network Monitoring Systems: Proficiency in configuring and utilizing enterprise-grade monitoring tools like SolarWinds Orion, Nagios XI, PRTG, Zabbix, or Datadog.
  • Load Balancing: Strong understanding and hands-on experience with load balancers, particularly F5 BIG-IP (LTM, GTM).
  • Core Network Services: Comprehensive knowledge of DNS, DHCP, NTP, and IP Address Management (IPAM).
  • Cloud Networking: Familiarity with networking concepts in public cloud environments such as AWS (VPC, Direct Connect) and Azure (VNet, ExpressRoute).
  • ITIL Framework: Solid understanding of IT Service Management principles, especially Incident, Problem, and Change Management. Experience with ServiceNow or a similar ITSM platform is crucial.
  • Scripting & Automation: Foundational skills in scripting languages like Python, PowerShell, or Bash for automating network tasks and reports.
  • WAN Technologies: Experience with modern and traditional WAN solutions, including SD-WAN, MPLS, and site-to-site VPNs.
  • Packet Analysis: Ability to use tools like Wireshark to perform deep packet inspection and diagnose complex network issues.

Typical Experience Range:
