Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Actively monitor the health, performance, and security of the global LAN, WAN, and wireless network infrastructure using enterprise-grade monitoring tools.
  • Provide initial, first-level response and triage for all network-related alerts and events, assessing impact and urgency.
  • Create, document, and manage incident and service request tickets within the ITSM platform (e.g., ServiceNow, Jira) with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Perform basic, scripted diagnostic and troubleshooting procedures on network devices, including routers, switches, access points, and firewalls.
  • Execute basic network commands (e.g., ping, traceroute, show interfaces, show log) to gather essential diagnostic information during an incident.
  • Clearly and concisely communicate outage and incident status updates to internal teams, management, and stakeholders via established communication channels.
  • Follow documented standard operating procedures (SOPs) and runbooks for incident resolution, standard changes, and maintenance tasks.
  • Escalate complex or unresolved incidents to senior Network Engineers or other Tier 2/3 support teams in a timely and effective manner.
  • Assist senior staff in the basic configuration and deployment of network hardware under direct supervision and guidance.
  • Meticulously document all actions, findings, and communications within the ticketing system to ensure a complete and accurate incident timeline.
  • Participate actively in shift handover meetings, ensuring a seamless transition of ongoing issues, open tickets, and critical tasks to the next shift.
  • Collaborate with telecommunication carriers and third-party service providers to report and troubleshoot circuit-related issues and outages.
  • Perform routine health checks on critical network infrastructure components to proactively identify potential problems.
  • Assist senior engineers in the scheduled patching and updating of network device firmware and software during maintenance windows.
  • Help maintain and update the organization's network documentation repository, including network diagrams, device inventories, and IP address schemas.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in generating regular and ad-hoc performance reports on network uptime, latency, and incident resolution metrics.
  • Shadow senior engineers during complex troubleshooting sessions, root cause analysis (RCA) meetings, and network design discussions.
  • Contribute to the creation, review, and refinement of NOC documentation, knowledge base articles, and operational runbooks.
  • Help maintain an accurate inventory of network assets, including physical hardware, software licenses, and support contracts.
  • Support the team in analyzing historical network traffic patterns to identify potential bottlenecks or areas for optimization.
  • Collaborate with the Security Operations team to investigate and respond to low-level, network-related security alerts.
  • Participate in team meetings, brainstorming sessions, and continuous improvement initiatives, contributing fresh perspectives and ideas.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Foundational understanding of core networking concepts, including the OSI model, TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, and subnetting.
  • Basic knowledge of routing and switching principles (familiarity with OSPF or BGP is a significant plus).
  • Familiarity with using command-line interfaces (CLI) for network devices, particularly Cisco IOS or Juniper Junos.
  • Exposure to or academic experience with network monitoring tools such as SolarWinds, Nagios, PRTG, Zabbix, or Datadog.
  • A basic understanding of network security principles, including the function of firewalls, VPNs, and access control lists (ACLs).
  • Familiarity with the purpose and use of IT Service Management (ITSM) or ticketing systems like ServiceNow, Jira, or Remedy.
  • Ability to perform basic hardware troubleshooting and an understanding of different network cabling types and standards.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Currently pursuing a degree or a recent graduate from a technical/vocational program.
