Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Expertly perform and record routine, sleep-deprived, and portable electroencephalograms (EEGs) to assess cerebral electrical activity, meticulously following established lab protocols.
  • Conduct complex long-term monitoring (LTM) for epilepsy in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU), including setup, daily maintenance, data pruning, and documenting clinical and subclinical seizure activity.
  • Accurately apply scalp electrodes using the International 10-20 system, ensuring low impedance and a stable connection to capture high-quality, artifact-free data.
  • Administer Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) by applying stimulating and recording electrodes to assess the function and health of peripheral nerves as directed by a physician.
  • Assist physicians during Electromyography (EMG) procedures by preparing the patient, setting up equipment, and providing technical support to evaluate muscle and nerve function.
  • Perform various Evoked Potential (EP) studies, including Visual (VEP), Brainstem Auditory (BAER), and Somatosensory (SSEP), to measure nerve pathway responses to stimulation.
  • Obtain and document comprehensive patient histories, gathering relevant neurological, medical, and medication information to provide crucial context for the interpreting physician.
  • Calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot a wide range of sophisticated neurodiagnostic equipment to ensure optimal performance, safety, and operational readiness.
  • Recognize and respond to clinically significant events, such as seizures or other medical emergencies, by alerting nursing and medical staff and initiating appropriate first-aid measures.
  • Meticulously annotate recordings with observations of patient behavior, clinical events, and artifacts, providing a complete and accurate picture for physician review.
  • Prepare and process diagnostic data, including clipping, archiving, and formatting reports for integration into the patient's electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Educate patients and their families about the procedures, explaining the process in a clear and compassionate manner to alleviate anxiety and ensure cooperation.
  • Adhere to strict infection control protocols and safety standards to protect both patients and staff within the clinical environment.
  • Demonstrate the ability to adapt testing protocols in real-time based on patient condition, age, and initial findings to maximize the diagnostic yield of the study.
  • Participate in intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) setups and monitoring, providing real-time feedback to surgeons to minimize the risk of neurological injury during surgery.
  • Review and confirm physician orders, ensuring the correct neurodiagnostic procedure is performed for each patient according to their specific clinical needs.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate procedural logs, billing information, and patient records in compliance with hospital and regulatory standards.
  • Comfortably and effectively perform studies on a diverse patient population, including neonatal, pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients in various states of consciousness.
  • Actively participate in departmental quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives to enhance the quality and efficiency of neurodiagnostic services.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies, techniques, and best practices in the field of neurodiagnostics through continuous education and professional development.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in the training and mentoring of junior technologists, students, and other clinical staff on neurodiagnostic procedures and equipment operation.
  • Manage and maintain inventory of departmental supplies, including electrodes, gels, and other consumables, ensuring availability for all procedures.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficiency in EEG Modalities: Expertise in performing routine EEG, Ambulatory EEG, and Long-Term Video EEG monitoring.
  • NCS/EMG Competency: Skilled in conducting Nerve Conduction Studies and providing technical assistance during EMG procedures.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduation from a CAAHEP (Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs) accredited program in Neurodiagnostic Technology (NDT) or Electroneurodiagnostic (END) Technology.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate of Science (A.S.) or Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Neurodiagnostic Technology or a related life science field.

Experience Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience in a high-acuity setting, with specific expertise in long-term monitoring (LTM) for epilepsy, intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM), or pediatric neurodiagnostics.
  • Professional certification from the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET) is highly preferred, such as Registered EEG Technologist (R. EEG T.), Registered Evoked Potential Technologist (R. EP T.), or Certification in Neurophysiologic Intraoperative Monitoring (CNIM). Candidates who are registry-eligible and able to obtain certification within one year of employment will be strongly considered.
