Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Direct and supervise all aspects of daily news gathering and production, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, accurate, and engaging content for all broadcast and digital platforms.
  • Establish and enforce the highest standards of journalistic ethics and integrity, ensuring all content is fair, balanced, and compliant with FCC regulations and company policies.
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive content strategy that aligns with the station's brand, targets key demographics, and drives audience growth and engagement.
  • Lead the editorial process, including approving story pitches, guiding reporters and producers, and making final decisions on story selection and placement in newscasts.
  • Manage the breaking news workflow, demonstrating exceptional judgment and composure to mobilize crews, coordinate live coverage, and disseminate information quickly and accurately across all platforms.
  • Oversee the recruitment, hiring, training, and ongoing performance management of all newsroom personnel, including anchors, reporters, producers, photographers, and digital staff.
  • Foster a positive, collaborative, and results-oriented newsroom culture that encourages innovation, professional development, and accountability.
  • Critically review daily newscasts and digital content to provide constructive feedback to staff, aiming for continuous improvement in storytelling, production value, and overall quality.
  • Plan and manage long-term coverage, including special projects, investigative reports, and coverage of major community and political events.
  • Manage the news department's operational and capital budgets, ensuring responsible allocation of resources, controlling expenses, and planning for future technology and staffing needs.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between the news department and other station departments, such as sales, marketing, and engineering, to ensure cohesive strategy and operations.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with community leaders, government officials, and key sources to enhance the station's news-gathering capabilities and community presence.
  • Analyze audience data, ratings, and digital analytics to inform content decisions, adjust strategy, and identify opportunities for growth.
  • Oversee the assignment desk to ensure efficient and strategic deployment of crews and resources for daily and future story coverage.
  • Champion the integration of digital-first workflows, ensuring that web, mobile, and social media content is a central part of the daily news strategy.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Newsroom Software Proficiency: Extensive experience with industry-standard newsroom computer systems such as ENPS or iNews.
  • Digital Content Management: Strong command of content management systems (CMS), video editing software (e.g., Adobe Premiere), and digital publishing platforms.
  • Social Media Management: Expertise in using social media platforms (X, Facebook, Instagram, etc.) for news gathering, distribution, and audience engagement.
  • Broadcast Technology: Solid understanding of broadcast production equipment, from studio cameras and control rooms to field transmission technology (e.g., LiveU, TVU).
  • Data & Analytics Interpretation: Ability to analyze Nielsen ratings, Comscore data, and other audience metrics to make informed strategic decisions.
