Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Review, copyedit, and proofread a high volume of news articles daily for clarity, grammar, spelling, and punctuation, ensuring strict adherence to our in-house style guide and AP style.
- Conduct rigorous fact-checking on all content, meticulously verifying sources, data points, statistics, and quotes to maintain the highest level of journalistic accuracy and integrity.
- Write compelling, SEO-optimized headlines, subheadings, and meta descriptions that improve search engine visibility and drive significant organic traffic.
- Publish and meticulously format articles, photo galleries, and other digital content using our Content Management System (CMS), ensuring a flawless and professional user experience.
- Coordinate the editorial calendar and content pipeline, effectively managing deadlines and assignments for both in-house staff and a network of freelance writers.
- Act as the primary point of contact for freelance contributors, handling everything from onboarding and assignment clarification to providing constructive feedback.
- Program the website's homepage and key section fronts, using real-time analytics to make data-driven decisions that feature the most engaging and important stories.
- Monitor real-time news feeds (e.g., Associated Press, Reuters) and social media trends to identify breaking news opportunities and pitch timely, relevant story ideas.
- Source, select, and perform basic edits on images, videos, and other multimedia assets to enhance storytelling and boost visual engagement.
- Collaborate closely with the social media and audience engagement teams to package and promote content effectively across various platforms for maximum reach.
- Manage the flow of content through all stages of the editing and approval process, proactively identifying and resolving bottlenecks in the editorial workflow.
- Build and schedule daily and weekly email newsletters, expertly curating top stories to engage our subscriber base and drive return visits.
- Ensure all articles are properly tagged and categorized within the CMS for optimal site architecture, navigation, and internal content discovery.
- Participate actively in daily news meetings and weekly editorial planning sessions, contributing fresh ideas, unique angles, and valuable insights.
- Provide clear, constructive, and timely feedback to writers to help them develop their skills and improve the quality of their future contributions.
