Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Provide direct leadership, mentorship, and performance evaluation for a team of Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurses (LPNs/LVNs), and Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), fostering a culture of professional growth and accountability.
  • Oversee the day-to-day clinical operations of the assigned unit(s) or shift, including managing patient flow, making patient assignments, and ensuring adequate staffing levels to meet patient acuity needs.
  • Serve as a primary clinical resource and expert for staff, offering guidance on complex patient cases, evidence-based practices, and the proper use of medical equipment and technology.
  • Conduct regular rounds on the unit to assess patient status, evaluate the quality of care being delivered, and ensure patient and family satisfaction, intervening as necessary to resolve issues.
  • Lead the response to and management of clinical emergencies, including codes and rapid response calls, by directing the team and ensuring established protocols are followed.
  • Facilitate effective and compassionate communication between the medical team, patients, and their families, ensuring all parties are informed about care plans, progress, and any significant changes.
  • Actively participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of patient care plans, ensuring they are individualized, holistic, and aligned with physician orders and nursing standards.
  • Investigate and resolve patient, family, and staff complaints and concerns in a timely and professional manner, documenting findings and implementing corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Ensure the unit's consistent compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, as well as accreditation standards from bodies like The Joint Commission (TJC) and organizational policies.
  • Manage staff scheduling to ensure continuous, safe, and efficient unit coverage, approving time off, and coordinating with other supervisors or staffing offices to fill gaps.
  • Oversee the accurate and timely completion of all required clinical documentation in the Electronic Health Record (EHR), auditing charts for quality, completeness, and compliance.
  • Play a key role in the hiring and onboarding process for new nursing staff, including interviewing, selecting candidates, and ensuring they receive a thorough and effective orientation.
  • Identify the educational needs of the nursing team and coordinate in-service training, continuing education opportunities, and competency validations to enhance clinical skills.
  • Monitor and manage the use of unit supplies and equipment, ensuring resources are used efficiently and collaborating on budget input for the department.
  • Champion and lead quality improvement and patient safety initiatives on the unit, collecting data, analyzing trends, and implementing process changes to enhance patient outcomes.
