Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Provide direct and compassionate basic care to patients, including bathing, grooming, dressing, and toileting, while always respecting patient dignity and privacy.
Assist patients with mobility, including transferring them from bed to chair, ambulating in hallways, and repositioning them in bed to prevent skin breakdown.
Accurately measure and meticulously document patient vital signs, such as blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, respiration rate, and oxygen saturation, reporting any variances to the RN immediately.
Perform and record patient intake and output, monitoring fluid balance and nutritional consumption to support the clinical care plan.
Assist patients with their nutritional needs, including distributing meal trays, feeding patients who are unable to feed themselves, and providing fresh water and snacks.
Collect patient specimens (e.g., urine, stool, sputum) as directed, ensuring proper labeling and timely transport to the laboratory for analysis.
Execute routine clinical procedures within the scope of practice, such as performing simple dressing changes, applying hot/cold packs, and performing bladder scans.
Perform phlebotomy (blood draws) and insert peripheral IV catheters after demonstrating and maintaining required competencies.
Conduct 12-lead electrocardiograms (EKGs) on patients as ordered by physicians, ensuring high-quality tracings and proper lead placement.
Meticulously document all care provided, observations, and patient responses in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) in a timely and accurate manner.
Respond promptly to patient call lights and requests, anticipating needs and ensuring a safe and comfortable environment is maintained.
Observe patients for any changes in their physical, mental, or emotional condition and report these critical observations to the supervising nurse.
Reinforce patient and family education as directed by the RN, ensuring they understand elements of their care plan and safety protocols.
Assist with the admission, transfer, and discharge process, including orienting patients to their room, gathering belongings, and ensuring a smooth transition.
Maintain a clean and organized patient care environment by changing bed linens, tidying rooms, and removing clutter.
Follow all hospital policies and procedures related to infection control, safety, and patient rights, including proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Perform hourly rounding on assigned patients to proactively address their needs for pain management, positioning, and personal comfort.
Assist in emergency situations by initiating or assisting with CPR, retrieving emergency equipment, and following the direction of the clinical team.
Manage and stock patient care supplies in rooms and on the unit, ensuring necessary equipment is readily available for the clinical team.
Provide post-mortem care with the utmost respect and dignity for the deceased patient and their family.

Secondary Functions

Participate actively in unit-based meetings, huddles, and educational in-services to stay current with best practices and policies.
Assist with the orientation and mentoring of new Nurse Technicians, sharing knowledge and demonstrating proper procedures.
Contribute to a positive and collaborative team environment by communicating respectfully and effectively with all members of the healthcare team.
Support unit workflow by answering unit phones, relaying messages, and assisting with light clerical duties as needed.
