Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Design, plan, and implement a rich, stimulating, and balanced curriculum in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework to support children's learning and development.
  • Act as a dedicated 'key person' for a group of children, fostering secure attachments and ensuring their individual emotional, physical, and educational needs are met.
  • Conduct regular, systematic observations and assessments of each child's progress, using these insights to inform future planning and tailor activities to individual learning journeys.
  • Create and maintain a safe, welcoming, and inclusive learning environment, ensuring all health, safety, and hygiene standards are rigorously followed both indoors and outdoors.
  • Foster positive, respectful, and collaborative relationships with parents and carers, providing regular feedback on their child's development and organizing parent-teacher meetings.
  • Manage and guide children's behavior effectively and positively, using approved techniques that promote self-regulation, empathy, and respect for others.
  • Prepare and organize a wide range of learning resources and materials, ensuring the classroom environment is vibrant, well-organized, and conducive to exploration and discovery.
  • Support children's daily care routines, including mealtimes, nappy changing, toilet training, and sleep times, with a sensitive and responsive approach.
  • Promote language and communication skills through storytelling, singing, group discussions, and role-playing, catering to children with diverse linguistic backgrounds.
  • Plan and lead engaging small and large group activities that encourage physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development.
  • Ensure the safeguarding and welfare of all children is paramount, adhering strictly to the nursery's child protection policies and procedures and reporting any concerns immediately.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a dedicated team, sharing ideas, supporting colleagues, and contributing to a positive and professional work culture.
  • Document children's achievements and milestones in their learning journey portfolios (e.g., using digital platforms like Tapestry or Famly) and share them effectively with parents.
  • Uphold and promote the nursery’s commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion, ensuring every child and family feels valued and respected.
  • Participate in continuous professional development, attending training sessions, workshops, and staff meetings to stay current with best practices in early childhood education.
  • Supervise and support children during outdoor play, recognizing the importance of risk-and-challenge in their physical and cognitive development.
  • Assist in the planning and execution of nursery events, seasonal celebrations, and educational trips, enhancing the children's learning experiences.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records, including attendance registers, accident reports, and medication administration forms.
  • Adapt teaching methods and resources to meet the needs of children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), working alongside the SENCO and external agencies.
  • Take responsibility for the general upkeep and cleanliness of the learning environment, ensuring resources are cared for and stored correctly.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in organizing and participating in nursery events, such as open days, parent evenings, and seasonal celebrations.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of nursery policies and procedures by providing constructive feedback and suggestions.
  • Mentor and support junior staff, apprentices, and students on placement, sharing best practices in early childhood education.
  • Participate in staff meetings and contribute to the overall planning and evaluation of the nursery's program and practices.

Required Skills & Competencies

  • Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework Knowledge: Deep understanding of the seven areas of learning and development and the ability to implement them effectively.
  • Pediatric First Aid & CPR Certification: Current and valid certification to respond to medical emergencies.
  • Child Protection & Safeguarding Training: In-depth knowledge of safeguarding procedures and legal responsibilities to protect children from harm.
  • Observation and Assessment Techniques: Proficiency in using methods like written notes, photographs, and digital apps (Tapestry, Famly) to track child development.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • A full and relevant Level 2 or Level 3 Diploma in Childcare and Education (e.g., NNEB, CACHE Level 3, NVQ Level 3) or equivalent qualification.

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Studies, Education, or a related field; or Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS).

Experience Requirements
