Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive nutritional assessments for diverse patient populations, evaluating dietary intake, medical history, anthropometric measurements, and biochemical data to identify nutritional risks and needs.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor individualized Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) plans and dietary interventions based on evidence-based practices and patient-specific goals, diagnoses, and preferences.
  • Provide one-on-one and group nutrition counseling and education to patients and their families on therapeutic diets, healthy eating habits, and lifestyle modifications for disease prevention and management.
  • Collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team, including physicians, nurses, therapists, and social workers, to ensure integrated and coordinated patient care.
  • Accurately document all aspects of nutrition care, including assessments, diagnoses, interventions, monitoring, and evaluation (ADIME), in the electronic medical record (EMR) system in a timely and compliant manner.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of nutrition interventions and make necessary adjustments to care plans to optimize patient outcomes and ensure progress toward nutritional goals.
  • Develop and present educational materials, workshops, and community outreach programs on various nutrition topics such as weight management, diabetes care, heart health, and sports nutrition.
  • Serve as a nutrition subject matter expert and resource for other healthcare professionals, providing consultations and in-service training to staff.
  • Stay current with the latest scientific research, trends, and best practices in the field of nutrition and dietetics through continuous professional development and education.
  • Participate in the development and revision of clinical nutrition policies, procedures, and protocols to ensure the delivery of high-quality, standardized care.
  • Manage and counsel patients with complex medical conditions requiring specialized nutritional support, such as enteral or parenteral nutrition.
  • Assess patient's understanding of, and readiness to change, their dietary habits, utilizing motivational interviewing techniques to foster patient engagement and adherence.
  • Calculate specific nutritional requirements for calories, protein, fluids, and other nutrients based on individual patient conditions and metabolic stress.
  • Review and approve menus for patient food service operations to ensure they meet nutritional guidelines and the needs of various therapeutic diets.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and performance improvement projects related to clinical nutrition services and patient satisfaction.
  • Provide nutrition-focused physical exams to assess for signs of malnutrition, nutrient deficiencies, or fluid imbalances.
  • Advocate for patients' nutritional needs and serve as a liaison between the patient, the healthcare team, and food service departments.
  • Monitor food and drug interactions and provide guidance to both patients and clinical staff to prevent adverse effects.
  • Design and implement wellness programs for corporate clients or community groups, focusing on preventative health and chronic disease risk reduction.
  • Respond to physician consults and patient referrals promptly, prioritizing care for high-risk individuals based on established screening criteria.
  • Supervise and mentor dietetic interns, students, and junior staff, providing guidance and evaluating their performance to foster the next generation of nutrition professionals.
  • Analyze and interpret patient data to track health outcomes, measure program effectiveness, and contribute to clinical research or case studies.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from a university or college accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND).

Preferred Education:

  • Master's Degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, Public Health, or a related field.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 1-3+ years of clinical or community nutrition experience.

  • Current state licensure or certification, as required by the state of practice.
