- Take precise frame measurements (A, B, DBL, temple length) and perform frame styling consultations to match face shape, lifestyle, and fashion preferences while maintaining optical fit and function.
- Measure monocular and binocular PD, seg heights for multifocals, and fitting heights for progressive lenses with repeatable, professional technique to reduce remakes and ensure patient satisfaction.
- Place accurate lab orders using POS/practice management systems and third-party lab portals, double-checking lens selection, coatings, tints, prism orientation, and special instructions to prevent production errors.
- Perform frame adjustments and minor repairs (screw replacement, hinge tightening, nose pad replacement, temple reshaping) on the sales floor and in the on-site lab to deliver same-day or rapid turn-around service.
- Operate lensometer, edger, blocker, tracer, and other basic lab equipment with proper safety procedures to complete edging and finishing tasks according to lab and manufacturer specifications.
- Inspect incoming lab work and completed frames for prescription accuracy, centration, optical axis alignment, and cosmetic finish; document any deviations and coordinate remakes as needed.
- Educate patients on contact lens wear and care when authorized, demonstrate insertion/removal and cleaning techniques, and provide written instructions and follow-up care recommendations.
- Verify vision insurance benefits (e.g., VSP, EyeMed) and process claims and authorizations; explain coverage details, co-pay, allowances, and out-of-pocket costs to customers transparently.
- Meet and exceed individual and store sales targets by actively cross-selling lenses, coatings, accessories, and warranty plans while maintaining professional standards of care and ethical dispensing.
- Maintain accurate patient records and eyewear order histories in the practice management system; update contact information, frame style codes, and measurement logs for future reference.
- Conduct pre- and post-exam tasks such as pre-testing, basic vision screenings (when within scope), and ensuring patients are prepared for provider exams to streamline patient flow.
- Manage inventory levels of frames, lenses, contact lens stock, consumables, and optical supplies; conduct cyclical counts, reconcile discrepancies, and reorder to maintain SKU availability and merchandising standards.
- Maintain visual merchandising: create attractive frame displays, rotate seasonal collections, and follow brand presentation guidelines to maximize product discovery and conversion.
- Provide exceptional aftercare: perform follow-up calls for satisfaction, troubleshoot visual complaints (e.g., adaptation issues with progressive lenses), and coordinate adjustments or remakes promptly to protect customer satisfaction and store reputation.
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, and state regulations governing dispensing, record-keeping, and infection control; maintain a clean, sanitized work environment and proper disposal of sharps/biological waste where applicable.
- Train and mentor new optical staff on eyewear dispensing best practices, lab ordering workflows, use of measurement tools, and customer service standards to raise team competency and reduce errors.
- Process returns, exchanges, warranty claims, and remakes in a professional and policy-compliant manner; coordinate with vendors and labs to resolve disputes and preserve customer retention.
- Reconcile daily cash, credit, and insurance payments; handle point-of-sale transactions accurately, prepare deposit sheets, and escalate discrepancies to management.
