Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate, program, and maintain precision optical fabrication equipment including CNC diamond turning machines, surface generation grinders, and computer-controlled polishers to produce lenses, mirrors, and optical substrates that meet specified surface figure, roughness, and dimensional tolerances.
  • Perform high-accuracy optical metrology using interferometry, profilometry, spectrophotometry, and scatterometry to verify surface figure, wavefront error, refractive index, transmission, and coating performance against blueprint and specification requirements.
  • Execute thin-film coating processes such as sputtering, e-beam evaporation, and ion-assisted deposition, including chamber preparation, process recipe execution, and post-coating inspection to achieve specified AR, HR, and beamsplitter coatings.
  • Assemble precision opto-mechanical subassemblies and lens stacks using torque-controlled fasteners, precision adhesive dispensing, bonding techniques, and alignment jigs to achieve required optical axis and focal performance.
  • Perform laser alignment and collimation procedures using HeNe/diode lasers, alignment telescopes, autocollimators, and beam profilers to center and align optical systems to mechanical datums and optical axes.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), optical specifications, and process control documentation to ensure compliance with part acceptance criteria.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot fabrication and metrology discrepancies by analyzing process variables, equipment performance, and measurement data, and implement corrective actions to improve yield and consistency.
  • Calibrate and maintain metrology instruments and test equipment, document calibration cycles, and escalate out-of-tolerance conditions to engineering or quality teams for disposition.
  • Prepare detailed inspection reports, process travelers, and nonconformance reports (NCRs) with photographic evidence and measurement traceability to support quality and regulatory audits.
  • Follow cleanroom protocols (Gowning, particulate control, contamination prevention), maintain ambient cleanliness requirements, and participate in housekeeping and contamination control activities to protect optical surfaces and coatings.
  • Execute environmental and mechanical stress testing on optical assemblies including vibration, thermal cycling, and shock test setups in coordination with test engineers to validate reliability and performance under specified conditions.
  • Program and run automated test sequences on optical test stations and data acquisition systems, collect, analyze, and archive measurement data using LabVIEW, Python, or proprietary software.
  • Implement process control techniques such as statistical process control (SPC), capability studies, and root cause analysis to monitor and continuously improve production metrics like Cp/Cpk, yield, and first-pass yield.
  • Maintain detailed process documentation, standard operating procedures (SOPs), work instructions, and training records to ensure reproducible outcomes and compliance with ISO 9001 / ISO 13485 or other industry standards.
  • Handle and inspect delicate optical substrates (glass, fused silica, silicon, ZnSe) and coated optics, using appropriate handling tools and packaging to prevent scratches, contamination, or damage during transport or storage.
  • Perform adhesive bonding, UV curing, and potting operations for optical assemblies, controlling bond line thickness, cure parameters, and post-cure inspection to meet alignment and mechanical stability requirements.
  • Support prototype build cycles by setting up temporary jigs, fixtures, and test hardware, rapidly iterating on assembly and test procedures in collaboration with R&D or design engineering teams.
  • Train and mentor junior technicians on optical fabrication, measurement techniques, safety protocols, and quality expectations to build bench-level capability and redundancy.
  • Participate in design-for-manufacturing (DFM) and design reviews by providing feedback on tolerances, assembly steps, testability, and material selection to improve manufacturability and cost-effectiveness.
  • Ensure safe handling and disposal of hazardous materials used in optical processing (solvents, acids, vacuum pump oils, coating materials) and maintain compliance with workplace safety, MSDS, and hazardous waste procedures.
  • Coordinate with purchasing and inventory teams to order optical consumables, coatings materials, adhesives, and calibration standards to maintain uninterrupted production schedules.
  • Facilitate internal and external supplier inspections for custom optical parts, provide acceptance criteria and reviewer input, and work with vendors to resolve out-of-spec issues.
  • Support customer-specific testing and certification activities, prepare test documentation and acceptance packages, and respond to technical inquiries regarding optical performance and assembly processes.
  • Analyze metrology data trends to recommend equipment upgrades, tooling changes, or process parameter adjustments that reduce cycle time, scrap, and rework.
  • Maintain traceability of parts and materials through barcode/RFID systems and electronic quality records to support product genealogy and post-delivery troubleshooting.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Photonics, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or equivalent and hands-on lab experience.

Experience Requirements

Preferred: 3–7+ years of demonstrated experience producing and testing precision optics, operating interferometers and coating systems, and implementing process controls in a manufacturing or R&D optics lab. Experience with ISO-compliant documentation, cleanroom environments, and automation/testing software (LabVIEW, Python) is strongly preferred.
