Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Read, interpret and apply architectural and structural blueprints, shop drawings and fabrication details to layout, cut, form and assemble ornamental iron pieces to exact tolerances and aesthetic specifications.
  • Measure and mark materials using precision tools (tape measures, calipers, micrometers, squares) to transfer design dimensions and ensure accurate fit-up for decorative metalwork such as railings, gates, balconies and stair components.
  • Fabricate ornamental metal components using cutting (oxy-fuel, plasma), forming (press brake, rollers), and shaping techniques while maintaining tight dimensional control for field installation.
  • Perform MIG, TIG and stick welding on mild steel, stainless steel and aluminum to produce structurally sound and visually clean welds appropriate for architectural finishes.
  • Assemble and fit-up complex ornamental assemblies in the shop, using jigs and fixtures to hold pieces in alignment for welding, grinding and finishing to ensure repeatability and quality.
  • Install ornamental ironwork on-site, including anchoring to concrete, masonry and structural steel using bolts, anchors, welds and approved fasteners while verifying plumb, level and alignment.
  • Carry out layout and preassembly of modular components for safe and efficient rigging, hoisting and erection on job sites using chains, slings, spreader bars and crane coordination.
  • Apply finishing processes such as grinding, sanding, bead blasting, priming, painting, powder coating and protective coatings to meet specified architectural finishes and corrosion control standards.
  • Implement quality control checkpoints throughout fabrication and installation, perform fit checks, dimensional inspections and final walk-throughs to ensure compliance with plans and safety codes.
  • Collaborate with estimators and project managers to review shop drawings, provide input on fabrication strategies, material requirements and labor hours for bids and production schedules.
  • Cut, fit and install decorative metal panels, perforated screens, balusters, newel posts and custom ornamental attachments to architectural substrates with a focus on visual continuity and fastener concealment.
  • Fabricate and repair custom pieces and one-off features for restoration projects, historic renovations and custom architectural commissions while preserving original design intent and patina where required.
  • Maintain accurate material usage logs, welding procedure records and welded joint documentation to support traceability and quality assurance (WPS/PQR adherence).
  • Operate and maintain shop machinery safely—band saws, plasma tables, press brakes, shears and welding equipment—performing routine maintenance and reporting defects that could impact production.
  • Coordinate with general contractors, masons, carpenters and iron erection crews to sequence installations, resolve site interferences and ensure on-time delivery and installation of ornamental elements.
  • Ensure all welding and fabrication activities meet relevant building codes, ASTM standards and local architectural finish requirements, and prepare work for third-party inspections as required.
  • Troubleshoot complex fit-up and alignment issues on-site, propose corrective welds, shims or design modifications and execute approved fixes while minimizing rework and schedule impact.
  • Train and mentor apprentice ironworkers and junior fabricators in layout, welding techniques, finishing procedures and safe rigging to build a capable shop and installation team.
  • Implement job-site safety protocols and participate in toolbox talks, fall protection planning, confined space precautions and fall-arrest equipment selection specific to ornamental ironwork installs at height.
  • Prepare parts for shipping and field delivery, package finished assemblies to prevent damage in transit, and coordinate logistics for staged installations.
  • Maintain accurate timecards, production reports and material inventories for shop and field work to support project accounting and purchasing.
  • Evaluate and recommend improvements to shop workflow, jigs and fixtures, and production layouts to increase throughput while maintaining artisanal quality in ornamental metalwork.
  • Communicate with architects, designers and clients to clarify finish requirements, site tolerances and aesthetic preferences, documenting approvals and change orders for custom metalwork.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and safety checks on rigging gear, slings, anchors and fall-protection equipment used during erection of decorative iron features.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED; vocational/trade school coursework in welding or metal fabrication preferred.

Preferred Education:

  • Technical diploma or associate degree in welding technology, fabrication engineering technology or related field is a plus.
