Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Receive, unload, and verify incoming shipments from carriers and vendors during overnight hours, ensuring accurate counts against purchase orders and documenting any discrepancies or damaged goods for follow-up with suppliers.
- Operate pallet jacks, hand trucks, forklifts (if certified), and other material-handling equipment to move inventory from receiving docks to staging areas or storage racks while following all safety protocols and OSHA-compliant procedures.
- Execute nightly stocking and replenishment of sales floors and pick locations using planograms and merchandising standards to ensure products are fronted, facings are correct, and seasonal displays are prepared for daytime customers.
- Perform systematic cycle counts and spot checks to maintain inventory accuracy, reconcile variances, and update inventory management systems (WMS, POS, RF scanners) promptly and accurately.
- Use handheld RF scanners or barcode scanners to scan and receive items, update system quantities, and verify SKU/UPC matches, ensuring digital inventory reflects physical stock.
- Price and tag merchandise, apply markdowns or labels, and update signage per store pricing policies so that merchandise is sale-ready when the store opens.
- Break down and organize pallets, shrink-wrap, and dispose of packaging materials safely and efficiently to maintain clear aisles and a safe working environment.
- Conduct nightly safety checks of equipment, shelving, and fixtures, report any hazards or maintenance needs to management, and implement immediate corrective actions when necessary.
- Prepare and stage online order pickups and ship-from-store orders accurately and on time, coordinating with customer service and e-commerce teams to meet promised pickup/ship windows.
- Follow established loss-prevention and shrink-reduction procedures, including secure handling of high-value items, controlled substances (where applicable), and suspicious activity reporting.
- Maintain sanitation standards in backroom, receiving, and sales areas by performing nightly cleaning tasks including sweeping, mopping, waste removal, and restroom upkeep per company SOPs.
- Execute returns processing and disposition of damaged or expired products according to store policy, ensuring appropriate documentation and timely removal from saleable inventory.
- Collaborate with day-shift managers and cross-functional teams by preparing inbound shipment reports, shift handover notes, and status updates to ensure continuity across shifts.
- Meet or exceed nightly productivity KPIs such as units stocked per hour, case picks, cycle count accuracy, and on-time order fulfillment while maintaining quality and safety.
- Train, mentor, and onboard new overnight associates on equipment operation, proper lifting techniques, company policies, and overnight workflows to build a high-performing night team.
- Troubleshoot inventory discrepancies by performing targeted count audits, investigating stock location errors, and escalating unresolved issues to inventory control or management.
- Implement seasonal resets, floor moves, and merchandising transitions during overnight windows, coordinating logistics to minimize disruption to store operations.

- Accurately complete shift logs, incident reports, and timekeeping records, and communicate any incidents, delays, or inventory issues to the overnight supervisor before shift end.
- Support emergency and loss prevention procedures, including assisting with building closures, alarm checks, and coordinated responses to spills, accidents, or security incidents.
- Optimize storage space and organize backroom inventory for efficient picking, ensuring FIFO (first-in, first-out) rotation for perishable and dated goods.
- Participate in continuous improvement by identifying process bottlenecks, recommending operational changes, and piloting new tools or workflows that improve overnight efficiency.
