Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop and design innovative, functional, and cost-effective packaging solutions for new and existing products, from initial concept to commercialization.
  • Manage packaging development projects from start to finish, establishing timelines, defining deliverables, and coordinating with all cross-functional stakeholders including Marketing, R&D, Quality, and Operations.
  • Create, manage, and meticulously maintain detailed packaging specifications, technical drawings, and Bill of Materials (BOMs) within company systems (e.g., SAP, PLM).
  • Collaborate closely with external suppliers and vendors to source, test, and qualify new packaging materials and components, ensuring they meet quality, performance, and cost targets.
  • Conduct and/or coordinate rigorous package performance testing (e.g., ISTA/ASTM ship tests, drop tests, vibration analysis) to guarantee product integrity throughout the supply chain.
  • Ensure all packaging components and finished goods packaging comply with relevant local and international regulations, including FDA, CPSC, and environmental labeling laws (e.g., FTC Green Guides, EPR).
  • Lead and support cost-saving initiatives by identifying opportunities for material reduction, process optimization, and supplier negotiation without compromising quality or brand experience.
  • Provide direct support to manufacturing and co-packing facilities, troubleshooting packaging-related issues on the production line to minimize downtime and waste.
  • Manage the packaging graphics and artwork process, routing files for approval, proofing color and content, and ensuring consistency with brand standards.
  • Develop and optimize pallet patterns and truckload configurations using software like CAPE or TOPS to maximize shipping efficiency and reduce transportation costs.
  • Support new product launches by ensuring all packaging components are available, approved, and ready for the first production run.
  • Perform root cause analysis for packaging failures, customer complaints, and shipping damage, implementing effective corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs).
  • Research, evaluate, and recommend new packaging technologies, materials, and systems to drive innovation and maintain a competitive edge.
  • Lead or actively participate in sustainability projects, focusing on increasing recycled content, improving recyclability, and reducing the overall environmental footprint of packaging.
  • Create physical mock-ups and prototypes for marketing presentations, consumer testing, and internal evaluations.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of various printing processes (flexography, lithography, digital, etc.) to guide artwork development and ensure high-quality output.
  • Develop and maintain a library of packaging component standards and physical samples for reference and quality control.
  • Analyze packaging material and component data to forecast needs, manage inventory, and identify trends or potential supply chain risks.
  • Act as the primary technical contact for all packaging-related inquiries from both internal teams and external partners.
  • Prepare and present project updates, test results, and business cases to senior management and key stakeholders.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Packaging Material Science: Deep knowledge of the properties, uses, and limitations of plastics, paperboard/corrugate, glass, metals, and flexible films.
  • Package Testing Protocols: Expertise in applying ISTA and ASTM standards for distribution and integrity testing.
  • Packaging Design Software: Proficiency with 2D/3D CAD software such as ArtiosCAD or SolidWorks for structural design.
  • Palletization Software: Hands-on experience with load optimization tools like CAPE Pack or TOPS.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Strong understanding of packaging-related regulations from bodies like the FDA, CPSC, and EPA, as well as transportation regulations (e.g., DOT, IATA).
  • Project Management: Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently, using tools like MS Project, Asana, or Jira to track timelines and resources.
  • Cost Analysis: Skill in calculating total landed cost, performing cost-benefit analysis, and managing budgets for packaging projects.
  • Bill of Materials (BOM) Management: Experience creating and maintaining complex BOMs within ERP or PLM systems (e.g., SAP).
  • Printing and Graphics Knowledge: Familiarity with print production processes and ability to review artwork files using tools like Adobe Illustrator or Acrobat.
  • Supplier Qualification & Auditing: Ability to evaluate and approve new packaging suppliers based on technical capability, quality systems, and capacity.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED coupled with significant, directly relevant industry experience. An Associate's Degree is often a baseline.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 2-7 years of direct experience in a packaging development, engineering, or technologist role.

Preferred: Experience within a specific fast-paced manufacturing environment such as Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG), Food & Beverage, Pharmaceuticals, or Cosmetics is highly valued. Demonstrated success in managing projects from concept through to successful launch is a key indicator of proficiency.
