Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Expertly ascend, descend, and traverse palm trees of various heights and species using specialized climbing techniques, including ropes, harnesses, and climbing spikes (gaffs), ensuring secure positioning for all tasks.
- Skillfully operate professional-grade chainsaws, handsaws, and other cutting tools while suspended at height to precisely prune dead, dying, or hazardous fronds, fruit stalks, and seed pods.
- Perform "skinning" or "shaving" of palm tree trunks to remove old frond bases, creating a smooth, aesthetically pleasing appearance per client specifications and horticultural best practices.
- Assess palm trees for health issues, including nutrient deficiencies, pest infestations (like the palm weevil), and diseases, and report findings to the Crew Lead or a Certified Arborist.
- Execute complex rigging operations to safely lower heavy fronds, fruit bunches, and other large sections of the tree, preventing damage to property and injury to people below.
- Meticulously follow and champion all company safety policies and industry regulations, including ANSI Z133 standards for arboricultural operations, at all times.
- Conduct thorough pre-climb inspections of the tree and surrounding work area to identify potential hazards such as power lines, structural weaknesses, unstable limbs, or pedestrian traffic.
- Properly inspect, maintain, and care for all personal and crew-issued climbing gear, ropes, saddles, and cutting equipment before and after each use.
- Safely operate heavy equipment on the ground, including aerial lifts, bucket trucks, chippers, and stump grinders, to support the overall tree care operation.
- Evaluate the structural integrity of palm trees to determine the safest and most effective method for pruning or, when necessary, complete removal.
- Participate in the safe felling and removal of entire palm trees that are dead, diseased, or pose an unacceptable risk, using advanced cutting and rigging techniques.
- Ensure the work zone is properly secured with cones, signs, and barriers to protect the public and direct traffic safely away from the drop zone.
- Collaborate effectively with ground crew members, providing clear and concise communication from the tree to direct rigging, debris removal, and other support activities.
- Maintain a high level of physical fitness and endurance to handle the strenuous demands of climbing and working in often extreme weather conditions for extended periods.
- Provide exceptional customer service when interacting with clients on-site, explaining the work being performed and ensuring their property is respected and left clean.
- Remove and properly dispose of all resulting green waste, including fronds and trunk sections, by feeding them into a wood chipper or loading them for hauling.
- Apply specialized knowledge of different palm species (e.g., Canary Island Date, Queen, Royal, Washingtonia) to apply the correct pruning techniques that promote health and vigor.
- Stay current with emerging techniques, tools, and safety protocols within the arboriculture industry through continuous learning and professional development.
- Assist in training and mentoring apprentice climbers and ground crew members on fundamental skills and safety procedures.
- Respond to emergency storm work, which may require removing fallen or damaged palm trees from structures, vehicles, and roadways outside of normal working hours.
Secondary Functions
- Assist ground crews with job site setup, dragging brush, processing wood, and performing a thorough final cleanup of the entire work area.
- Contribute proactively to daily job site hazard analyses and participate in weekly safety meetings, sharing observations and promoting a culture of safety.
- Engage with clients on-site to provide clear, professional communication about the work plan, progress, and to answer basic questions regarding the service.
- Perform routine maintenance, cleaning, and sharpening of chainsaws, handsaws, and other tools to ensure they remain in safe and optimal working condition.
