Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop and engineer initial master patterns for new apparel designs by interpreting design sketches, technical packs, or draped muslin forms.
  • Lead and participate in live fit sessions on models or dress forms, meticulously analyzing garment balance, drape, and comfort to pinpoint fit issues.
  • Execute precise pattern revisions and corrections based on feedback from designers and technical designers to perfect the garment's fit and silhouette.
  • Digitize, grade, and maintain a comprehensive library of digital pattern blocks and finished patterns using specialized CAD software (e.g., Gerber, Lectra, Optitex).
  • Create and maintain detailed technical specification packages, including graded measurement charts, construction details, and sewing instructions for factories.
  • Collaborate intimately with the design team throughout the development process, providing expert technical feedback on construction feasibility and material suitability.
  • Ensure all patterns are optimized for production, considering fabric consumption, cutting efficiency, and overall manufacturability to achieve cost targets.
  • Create markers for sample and bulk production to ensure the most efficient use of fabric and calculate material yield.
  • Drape new silhouettes on a dress form to explore innovative shapes and create a foundational pattern for complex or asymmetrical designs.
  • Develop and establish a library of core block patterns for the brand, ensuring consistency in fit and sizing across all collections and seasons.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex fit, construction, and production issues by applying deep knowledge of pattern engineering and garment assembly.
  • Manage the pattern lifecycle from initial concept through to the final, production-approved pattern, ensuring all changes are tracked and documented.
  • Communicate highly technical pattern and construction information clearly and effectively to internal teams and overseas manufacturing partners.
  • Conduct competitor fit and construction analysis to stay informed of industry standards and identify opportunities for innovation and improvement.
  • Work closely with sample makers to ensure patterns are interpreted correctly and provide guidance on complex sewing techniques.
  • Verify that final production samples conform to the approved pattern and graded size specifications before bulk production commences.
  • Create patterns for a diverse range of product categories, including wovens, knits, tailoring, and outerwear, adapting techniques for different fabric properties.
  • Stay current with the latest advancements in pattern making technology, CAD software, and 3D virtual prototyping tools.
  • Evaluate and measure pre-production and top-of-production samples against the spec sheet, providing clear comments and approval or rejection feedback.
  • Ensure the final pattern reflects the designer's original aesthetic intent while being fully optimized for a flawless fit and efficient production.
  • Generate and maintain all pattern-related documentation, including pattern cards, digitizing records, and revision history for each style.

  • Garment Construction and Sewing: Deep, hands-on knowledge of how garments are assembled, including various seam types and finishes.
  • CAD Software Proficiency: Expertise in industry-standard systems such as Gerber Accumark, Lectra Modaris, or Optitex.
