Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Greet patients and customers in a warm, professional, and timely manner, creating a positive and welcoming pharmacy experience.
- Receive and process new and refill prescription requests submitted in-person, by phone, or electronically, verifying patient information for accuracy.
- Accurately enter patient demographics, insurance information, and prescription details into the pharmacy's computer system.
- Triage incoming phone calls, directing patient and physician inquiries to the appropriate pharmacist or staff member.
- Assist pharmacists in the preparation of prescriptions by counting, pouring, and labeling medications under direct supervision.
- Retrieve medication from stock, ensuring the correct drug, dosage, and quantity are selected as per the prescription label.
- Operate the cash register to process sales of prescriptions and over-the-counter products, handling cash, credit, and debit transactions.
- Assist patients in locating over-the-counter (OTC) medications, personal care items, and other pharmacy products.
- Manage the prescription pick-up process, verifying patient identity and obtaining necessary signatures in compliance with privacy regulations.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and professional-looking pharmacy workspace, including shelves, counters, and waiting areas.
- Prepare and package medications for delivery or mail order, ensuring all contents are secure and correctly addressed.
- Uphold patient confidentiality at all times, strictly adhering to HIPAA guidelines and company privacy policies.
Secondary Functions
- Assist with regular inventory management, including receiving and unpacking orders, stocking shelves, and rotating stock to ensure freshness.
- Monitor inventory levels for both prescription and OTC products, identifying and communicating low-stock items to the inventory manager or pharmacist.
- Perform daily and weekly checks for expired medications on the shelves and in storage, removing and documenting them according to procedure.
- Prepare and file prescription hardcopies, invoices, and other administrative paperwork in an organized and accessible manner.
- Assist in the third-party billing process by resolving common insurance rejections and re-submitting claims.
- Generate and review reports from the pharmacy system as directed, such as daily sales or inventory summaries.
- Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis to help optimize pharmacy operations.
- Contribute to the organization's commitment to patient safety by participating in quality assurance checks and protocols.
