Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Interpret and accurately process prescription orders received from medical providers, verifying for completeness, accuracy, and authenticity under pharmacist supervision.
  • Perform all stages of the medication dispensing process, including selecting the correct drug, dosage form, and quantity, and preparing labels in accordance with state and federal laws.
  • Provide direct, patient-centered counseling on new and refilled prescriptions, explaining medication purpose, proper administration, potential side effects, and storage instructions.
  • Engage with patients to gather comprehensive medication histories, identify potential allergies or drug interactions, and update patient profiles with meticulous accuracy.
  • Administer immunizations (e.g., influenza, COVID-19, shingles) to eligible patients after completing certified training and under the appropriate supervision and protocols.
  • Conduct Medication Therapy Management (MTM) sessions, including comprehensive medication reviews (CMRs), to help patients manage complex regimens and resolve drug-related problems.
  • Operate and maintain pharmacy automation and technology, such as automated dispensing cabinets, pill counters, and pharmacy management software systems, ensuring their proper function.
  • Assist in the preparation of non-sterile compounded medications, adhering strictly to formulation records and USP <795> guidelines for safety and quality.
  • Handle third-party insurance and benefits adjudication, troubleshooting claim rejections and communicating with patients about co-pays and coverage issues.
  • Triage and manage incoming phone calls from patients, physicians, and other healthcare professionals, resolving issues within the scope of an intern or escalating to a pharmacist when necessary.
  • Actively participate in patient safety programs by identifying and reporting potential medication errors or near-misses through established quality assurance protocols.
  • Educate patients on the proper use of over-the-counter (OTC) medications and medical devices, such as blood glucose monitors, inhalers, and blood pressure cuffs.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and secure pharmacy environment in compliance with company policies and regulatory standards.
  • Assist pharmacists in conducting clinical services, such as health screenings (e.g., blood pressure, cholesterol), point-of-care testing, and patient wellness programs.
  • Effectively communicate with prescribers' offices to clarify ambiguous prescription details, request refills, and discuss therapeutic substitutions.
  • Participate in inventory management activities, including checking for outdated medications, performing cycle counts, and assisting with drug ordering and receiving processes.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Completion of the first professional year (P1) of a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) program.
