Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Accurately and efficiently interpret, enter, and process prescription orders received from healthcare professionals into the pharmacy management system.
  • Prepare and dispense prescription medications for patients, including precisely counting, pouring, and labeling pharmaceuticals under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist.
  • Manage and maintain confidential patient profiles, ensuring all personal, allergy, and insurance information is up-to-date and entered with high accuracy.
  • Provide exceptional patient service by professionally answering phone calls, addressing patient inquiries, and referring any clinical questions to the pharmacist.
  • Handle prescription insurance claims by processing, troubleshooting, and resolving third-party rejections and prior authorization requirements.
  • Manage pharmacy inventory by ordering, receiving, verifying, and stocking pharmaceutical supplies and medications, ensuring proper storage conditions.
  • Perform regular inventory counts and audits to identify discrepancies, remove outdated or damaged drugs, and process returns to suppliers.
  • Compound non-sterile medications, such as creams, ointments, and oral suspensions, following established formulas and safety protocols.
  • Prepare sterile intravenous (IV) admixtures and other parenteral products in a cleanroom environment, adhering strictly to USP <797> and <800> standards (in hospital/infusion settings).
  • Operate and maintain automated dispensing cabinets (e.g., Pyxis, Omnicell), including restocking, troubleshooting, and generating usage reports.
  • Assist patients at the point of sale, processing payments for prescriptions and over-the-counter products accurately and courteously.
  • Ensure full compliance with all federal and state laws, regulations, and pharmacy policies, including HIPAA, to protect patient privacy and confidentiality.
  • Communicate effectively with physicians' offices and other healthcare providers to clarify prescription information or request refill authorizations.
  • Assist the pharmacist in identifying potential drug interactions, therapeutic duplications, or other medication-related problems for clinical review.
  • Pre-pack bulk medications into unit-dose or unit-of-use packaging for streamlined dispensing in hospital or long-term care settings.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and professional pharmacy workspace, including equipment and compounding areas, to ensure a safe and efficient environment.
  • Triage incoming tasks and prioritize prescription fulfillment based on urgency and patient needs to optimize workflow and minimize wait times.
  • Assist with medication reconciliation processes by comparing patient-reported medication lists with medical records.
  • Participate in the pharmacy’s quality improvement initiatives by collecting data, identifying opportunities for process enhancement, and implementing solutions.
  • Educate patients on the use of medical devices such as glucose meters or blood pressure cuffs and direct them to the pharmacist for counseling.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Associate of Science (A.S.) degree in Pharmacy Technology or a related healthcare field.
  • National certification (CPhT) from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
