Primary Functions

  • Perform high-end, non-destructive retouching on a variety of photographic assets, including product, lifestyle, and editorial images, ensuring a natural and polished final look.
  • Execute precise color correction and color grading to ensure consistency across multiple images in a series and to align with specific brand palettes and campaign aesthetics.
  • Manage and process a high volume of raw images from photo shoots, making initial selections (culling) and preparing them for the post-production pipeline.
  • Ensure all photography consistently adheres to established brand standards, style guides, and quality benchmarks for composition, tone, and overall visual identity.
  • Collaborate directly with photographers and art directors to understand the creative vision for a project and provide feedback during and after shoots to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Crop, resize, and format images for a wide range of end-uses, including e-commerce websites, social media platforms, digital advertising, email marketing, and print materials.
  • Create complex composites by seamlessly blending multiple images, elements, and backgrounds to construct a single, cohesive, and believable final image.
  • Manage workflow and deadlines for multiple projects simultaneously, effectively prioritizing tasks to meet fast-paced production schedules without compromising quality.
  • Conduct rigorous quality assurance checks on all final images to identify and correct any imperfections, inconsistencies, or technical flaws before publication.
  • Organize, keyword, and maintain a systematic and searchable digital asset management (DAM) or server-based library for all photographic content.
  • Develop, document, and refine post-production workflows, presets, and action sets to increase efficiency, scalability, and consistency within the creative team.
  • Stay current with the latest advancements in photo editing software, industry techniques, AI-powered tools, and visual trends to continuously elevate the quality of work.
  • Remove or alter backgrounds, products, or other elements from images as required, using advanced masking and cloning techniques.
  • Prepare and deliver final image files in the correct formats, resolutions, and color profiles (e.g., sRGB, CMYK) as specified for web and print production.
  • Review and select the best images from a take, applying a discerning eye for storytelling, emotional impact, and technical excellence.
  • Provide clear, constructive feedback to internal and external photographers or retouchers to guide them toward achieving the desired look and feel.
  • Handle image archiving and backup procedures to ensure the long-term safety and accessibility of all digital photo assets.
  • Perform advanced image manipulation tasks, such as liquifying, frequency separation for skin retouching, and perspective correction.
  • Collaborate with the marketing and social media teams to ensure visual content is optimized for engagement and performance on each specific platform.
  • Manage the end-to-end post-production process, from initial image ingestion and culling to final delivery and archiving.
  • Create and apply metadata, including captions, keywords, and usage rights information, to all images within the DAM system to ensure proper tracking and compliance.

  • Assist on set during photo shoots with digital tech responsibilities, such as tethered capture, file management, and on-the-fly image review.
  • Research and compile mood boards and visual references to support pre-production planning and concept development for upcoming shoots.

  • Contribute to the selection and management of freelance retouchers or editing services, providing clear direction and quality control on outsourced work.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Expert-level proficiency in Adobe Photoshop, including advanced layers, masks, smart objects, actions, and generative AI tools.
  • Strong proficiency in Adobe Lightroom Classic and/or Capture One for RAW image processing, culling, and batch editing.
  • Deep understanding of color theory, color spaces (sRGB, Adobe RGB, CMYK), and color management workflows for both digital and print.
  • Mastery of advanced retouching techniques, including frequency separation, dodging and burning, and high-end compositing.
  • Proficiency with various selection and masking tools, including the Pen Tool, for creating precise and clean cutouts.
  • Experience with Digital Asset Management (DAM) systems for organizing, keywording, and archiving large volumes of images.
  • Knowledge of tethered shooting workflows and associated software (e.g., Capture One, Lightroom Tethered Capture).
  • Familiarity with various camera and lighting equipment and how they impact the post-production process.
  • Ability to work efficiently on a Mac or PC platform and manage large file sizes and complex folder structures.
  • Understanding of image formatting, compression, and optimization principles for web and mobile performance.
  • Knowledge of scripting or creating automated workflows (e.g., Photoshop Actions, droplets) to enhance productivity.
