Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Supervise and coordinate the daily activities of plant operators and technicians to ensure production schedules are met efficiently and safely.
  • Monitor all plant processes and equipment performance, utilizing SCADA, DCS, or other control systems to identify and troubleshoot operational issues in real-time.
  • Enforce strict adherence to all Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) policies, conducting regular safety audits, risk assessments, and incident investigations.
  • Drive the implementation of quality control procedures to guarantee that all products meet or exceed established specifications and regulatory requirements.
  • Champion continuous improvement initiatives by identifying process bottlenecks, analyzing operational data, and implementing Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma methodologies.
  • Develop and manage shift schedules, assignments, and rotations to ensure adequate staffing levels for continuous plant operation.
  • Facilitate comprehensive training and development programs for plant personnel on standard operating procedures (SOPs), safety protocols, and new equipment.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed operational logs, production records, and shift reports for management review and regulatory compliance.
  • Collaborate closely with the maintenance department to plan and execute preventive and corrective maintenance activities, minimizing equipment downtime.
  • Manage the inventory of raw materials, chemicals, and spare parts, ensuring optimal stock levels to support uninterrupted production.
  • Lead root cause analysis (RCA) for any plant upsets, equipment failures, or quality deviations, and implement effective corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
  • Ensure the plant operates in full compliance with local, state, and federal environmental regulations, including emissions monitoring and waste disposal.
  • Prepare and present regular performance reports to senior management, highlighting key performance indicators (KPIs) such as OEE, production output, and safety metrics.
  • Act as the primary point of contact and incident commander during plant emergencies, directing response efforts effectively to ensure personnel safety and minimize asset damage.
  • Oversee the startup and shutdown procedures for plant equipment and processes, ensuring they are conducted in a safe and orderly manner.
  • Evaluate and recommend new technologies or process modifications to enhance plant efficiency, reduce costs, and improve product quality.
  • Manage operational budgets for your designated area, tracking expenditures and identifying opportunities for cost savings.
  • Foster a positive and collaborative team environment, promoting open communication and actively engaging employees in problem-solving.
  • Conduct regular performance reviews for direct reports, providing constructive feedback and setting clear goals for professional growth.
  • Liaise with supply chain and logistics teams to coordinate the timely delivery of raw materials and the shipment of finished goods.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficiency with Process Control Systems (e.g., SCADA, DCS, PLC) for monitoring and controlling plant operations.
  • Strong knowledge of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) management systems (e.g., ISO 45001, ISO 14001) and risk assessment methodologies.
  • Expertise in Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and other continuous improvement methodologies for process optimization.
  • Competency in using Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) for production planning and tracking.
  • Advanced Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and problem-solving techniques (e.g., 5 Whys, Fishbone Diagrams).
  • Solid understanding of mechanical and chemical processes relevant to the specific industry (e.g., manufacturing, power generation, chemical processing).
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents, including P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams), electrical schematics, and equipment manuals.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or a technical diploma combined with significant relevant experience.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 3-7 years of progressive experience within a manufacturing, chemical processing, power generation, or similar industrial plant environment.

  • At least 2 years of experience in a supervisory or leadership capacity, with a proven track record of improving safety, quality, and productivity metrics. Experience in a unionized environment is a plus.
