Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop, direct, and execute a comprehensive, multi-year political and electoral strategy in alignment with the organization's core mission and long-term goals.
  • Serve as the organization's principal liaison to elected officials, government agencies, political parties, and their senior staff at the federal, state, and local levels.
  • Design and manage independent expenditure and electoral campaigns, including overseeing targeting, polling, paid media, and direct mail programs.
  • Cultivate and maintain strong, trust-based relationships with a broad network of political stakeholders, including donors, allied organizations, community leaders, and consultants.
  • Lead and mentor a team of political staff, organizers, and consultants, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and accountability.
  • Act as a primary spokesperson for the organization on political matters, representing our positions in media appearances, at conferences, and in high-level meetings.
  • Provide expert political analysis and strategic counsel to the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and senior leadership team.
  • Direct the organization's lobbying efforts, including shaping legislative priorities, tracking key legislation, and mobilizing support or opposition for specific bills.
  • Build and lead powerful, diverse coalitions to amplify our advocacy efforts and achieve shared policy and electoral objectives.
  • Oversee the candidate endorsement process, including developing criteria, managing questionnaires, conducting interviews, and making strategic recommendations.
  • Direct robust, data-driven voter registration, education, and Get-Out-The-Vote (GOTV) programs to maximize electoral impact.
  • Develop and manage the political department's multi-million dollar budget, ensuring resources are allocated effectively to maximize impact and compliance.
  • Monitor and analyze the national and state-level political climate, electoral trends, and polling data to identify threats and opportunities.
  • Integrate political strategy with the organization's communications, organizing, and development departments to ensure a cohesive, multi-faceted approach.
  • Lead strategic fundraising initiatives for the organization's political action committee (PAC), including major donor cultivation and direct solicitation.

Secondary Functions

  • Ensure all political and lobbying activities strictly adhere to federal, state, and local campaign finance, disclosure, and ethics regulations.
  • Prepare comprehensive briefing materials, strategic memos, and detailed reports for senior leadership and board members on the evolving political landscape.
  • Coordinate with the communications department to ensure the alignment and consistency of political messaging with broader public relations and brand strategy.
  • Manage the planning, logistics, and execution of key political events, including legislative advocacy days, fundraisers, town halls, and press conferences.
  • Oversee the recruitment, training, and deployment of volunteers and temporary staff for political and electoral campaign activities.
  • Drive the process for holding elected officials accountable to their commitments and our organization's priorities through strategic engagement and public campaigns.
  • Maintain a sophisticated understanding and database of key political contacts, stakeholder relationships, and legislative voting records.
  • Advise on the political implications of organizational policy positions and public statements.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree

Preferred Education:

  • Master’s Degree in Public Policy (MPP), Public Administration (MPA), or a Juris Doctor (JD).

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 8-12+ years of progressively responsible experience in politics.

Preferred: Extensive, senior-level experience managing federal or multi-state political, legislative, or electoral campaigns, with a significant and verifiable track record of success. Deep familiarity with the specific issue area of our organization is a major asset. Experience working within a national advocacy organization, campaign committee, or on Capitol Hill is highly desirable.
