Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform comprehensive visual and dimensional inspections of raw materials, in-process components, and finished assemblies to ensure conformance with engineering drawings, specifications, and quality standards.
  • Utilize a wide range of precision measuring instruments, including calipers, micrometers, height gauges, bore gauges, optical comparators, and Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM), to verify product dimensions.
  • Accurately interpret complex engineering blueprints, technical drawings, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) callouts to confirm product compliance.
  • Meticulously document inspection results, record test data, and maintain detailed logs of approved and rejected parts in the quality management system (QMS) or ERP system.
  • Generate, manage, and process Non-Conforming Material Reports (NCMRs) for any parts or products that fail to meet specifications, and segregate non-conforming items to prevent unintended use.
  • Conduct First Article Inspections (FAIs) on new or revised products, creating detailed reports to validate that production processes are capable of producing parts to specification.
  • Approve finished products by confirming they meet all quality requirements and release them for shipment; prepare and review Certificates of Conformance (CoC) as required.
  • Collaborate directly with production supervisors and operators to communicate quality issues, provide feedback, and assist in identifying the root cause of defects.
  • Calibrate and maintain inspection, measurement, and test equipment, ensuring all tools are in proper working order and their calibration is current.
  • Perform receiving inspections on materials and components from suppliers to verify they meet purchase order specifications and quality requirements.
  • Execute in-process quality audits on the production floor to ensure manufacturing processes are being followed correctly and are producing conforming parts.
  • Participate actively in root cause analysis and corrective/preventive action (CAPA) initiatives to address quality issues and prevent their recurrence.
  • Review and approve production documentation and work instructions to ensure they contain clear, accurate, and up-to-date quality criteria.
  • Support the development and refinement of inspection plans, procedures, and quality control checklists to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the inspection process.
  • Monitor and analyze production data using Statistical Process Control (SPC) methods to identify trends, process shifts, and opportunities for improvement.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in training production personnel on quality awareness, measurement techniques, and the proper handling of conforming and non-conforming materials.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement and Lean Manufacturing initiatives by identifying and suggesting opportunities to reduce waste, improve quality, and increase efficiency.

  • Support the supplier quality team by providing data and feedback on the performance of externally sourced components and materials.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment within the quality lab and inspection areas, adhering to all 5S and safety protocols.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Blueprint Reading: Proficient in interpreting complex engineering drawings, schematics, and technical specifications.
  • Precision Measurement: Skilled in the use of various metrology tools like calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and optical comparators.
  • Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T): Strong understanding and practical application of GD&T principles and symbols.
  • CMM Operation: Experience operating, and in some cases programming, Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs).
  • Quality Management Systems (QMS): Familiarity with QMS software and standards such as ISO 9001, AS9100, or IATF 16949.
  • Root Cause Analysis: Knowledge of problem-solving methodologies like 5 Whys, Fishbone Diagrams, and 8D.
  • Documentation: Ability to create clear, concise, and accurate inspection reports, non-conformance reports, and data logs.
  • Microsoft Office Suite: Competency in using Excel for data entry and analysis, and Word for report writing.
  • Statistical Process Control (SPC): Basic understanding of SPC concepts and the ability to read control charts.
  • ERP/MRP Systems: Experience navigating enterprise resource planning systems to track parts and review production orders.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's Degree in a technical discipline or a professional certification from the American Society for Quality (ASQ), such as Certified Quality Inspector (CQI) or Certified Quality Technician (CQT).
