Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive Quality Control Plans (QCPs) for new and existing products, ensuring all inspection and testing stages are clearly defined.
  • Strategically plan and schedule all quality inspection activities for incoming materials, in-process production, and final finished goods to align with production schedules and delivery deadlines.
  • Meticulously review and interpret complex engineering drawings, technical specifications, and customer requirements to translate them into actionable inspection criteria and work instructions.
  • Author and maintain detailed inspection procedures, checklists, and visual aids to ensure consistency and accuracy in quality assessments performed by QC inspectors.
  • Act as the primary point of contact between the Quality department and Production Planning, proactively coordinating to resolve scheduling conflicts and ensure a smooth workflow.
  • Manage the non-conformance process by creating Non-Conforming Reports (NCRs), leading initial containment activities, and ensuring timely disposition of discrepant material.
  • Participate in or lead root cause analysis (RCA) investigations for quality escapes and significant internal failures, utilizing tools like 5 Whys, Fishbone Diagrams, and 8D methodology.
  • Prepare for and actively participate in internal, customer, and third-party quality audits (e.g., ISO 9001, AS9100), ensuring all planning documentation is compliant and readily available.
  • Monitor, analyze, and report on key quality performance indicators (KPIs) such as first pass yield, scrap rates, and on-time inspection completion to identify trends and areas for improvement.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives by recommending process modifications, equipment upgrades, or changes to inspection methods based on data analysis and direct observation.
  • Liaise with the Supplier Quality team to communicate supplier-related defects and ensure that incoming material inspection plans are adequate to mitigate risks.
  • Generate and manage the submission of First Article Inspection Reports (FAIRs) in accordance with industry standards (e.g., AS9102) for new parts and process changes.
  • Utilize the company's Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) or Manufacturing Execution System (MES) to schedule inspections, track material status, and maintain quality records.
  • Ensure all quality planning and inspection activities are in strict compliance with the established Quality Management System (QMS) and relevant regulatory standards.
  • Develop and maintain a system for the control and calibration of all measurement and test equipment, coordinating with external vendors as necessary.
  • Provide critical quality-related input during New Product Introduction (NPI) and design review meetings to ensure manufacturability and inspectability are considered early on.
  • Act as a subject matter expert on quality standards and inspection techniques, providing guidance and support to production personnel and inspectors.
  • Coordinate the flow of parts and assemblies through the inspection department to minimize bottlenecks and support production throughput goals.
  • Facilitate Material Review Board (MRB) meetings, presenting data on non-conforming products and helping the cross-functional team determine the appropriate disposition.
  • Review and approve supplier-provided quality documentation, such as Certificates of Conformance and material test reports, prior to releasing material for production use.
  • Lead or support the implementation of Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPAs), verifying the effectiveness of implemented solutions to prevent recurrence of issues.

Secondary Functions

  • Support the Supplier Quality Engineering team by providing detailed data and feedback on supplier performance based on incoming inspection results.
  • Participate in cross-functional continuous improvement projects and Kaizen events aimed at enhancing overall operational efficiency and product quality.
  • Assist in the formal training and ongoing development of Quality Control Inspectors on new procedures, equipment, and inspection techniques.
  • Collaborate with the New Product Introduction (NPI) team to provide quality-focused risk assessments and develop preliminary quality plans for prototype and pre-production builds.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Quality Management Systems (QMS): Deep understanding and practical application of standards like ISO 9001, AS9100, or ISO 13485.
  • Technical Blueprint & GD&T Interpretation: Strong ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings, including a solid grasp of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • ERP/MRP Systems: Proficiency in using enterprise-level software (e.g., SAP, Oracle, Epicor) for planning, inventory management, and quality module transactions.
  • Root Cause Analysis Tools: Hands-on experience with structured problem-solving methodologies such as 5 Whys, Fishbone (Ishikawa) diagrams, and 8D reports.
  • Inspection & Metrology: Familiarity with a wide range of measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, CMMs, vision systems) and their applications.
  • Statistical Process Control (SPC): Knowledge of SPC principles and the ability to analyze control charts and process capability data to monitor and improve processes.
  • Advanced Data Analysis: Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, charts) for analyzing quality data and generating performance reports.
  • FAIR & PPAP: Experience creating and reviewing First Article Inspection Reports (FAIRs) and Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) documentation.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Professional certifications such as Certified Quality Technician (CQT) or Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) from ASQ are highly desirable.
