Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform comprehensive first-article, in-process, and final inspections on manufactured components, sub-assemblies, and finished products using precision measurement instruments.
  • Interpret complex engineering drawings, blueprints, and schematics, including a strong understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) symbols.
  • Operate and potentially program advanced metrology equipment such as Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM), Vision Systems, and Surface Profilometers to validate part conformity.
  • Accurately document inspection results by completing detailed reports, logs, and checklists, and maintain organized quality records for traceability and auditing purposes.
  • Identify, quarantine, and document non-conforming products or materials by generating Non-Conforming Material Reports (NCMRs) in the ERP/MRP system.
  • Collaborate directly with production, engineering, and supply chain teams to communicate quality issues and assist in root cause analysis investigations.
  • Perform regular calibration and verification of measurement tools and gauges to ensure their accuracy and maintain the integrity of the measurement system.
  • Conduct process audits on the manufacturing floor to verify that production processes are being followed according to documented work instructions and quality plans.
  • Utilize statistical process control (SPC) techniques to monitor manufacturing processes, analyze trends, and identify opportunities for process improvement.
  • Participate actively in root cause analysis (RCA) and problem-solving activities (e.g., 5-Why, 8D, Fishbone diagrams) to implement effective corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
  • Inspect incoming raw materials and components from suppliers to ensure they meet purchase order specifications and quality requirements before release to production.
  • Develop and update quality control documentation, including inspection plans, work instructions, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Manage the quarantine area for non-conforming materials, coordinating the disposition of parts (rework, scrap, or return to vendor) as determined by the Material Review Board (MRB).
  • Assist Quality Engineers in the development and execution of validation protocols (IQ/OQ/PQ) for new equipment and processes.
  • Support internal and external audits (e.g., ISO 9001, AS9100) by gathering required documentation, demonstrating processes, and answering auditor inquiries.
  • Create and maintain Certificates of Conformance (CofC) or Certificates of Analysis (CofA) for outgoing shipments to customers.
  • Use various handheld measuring tools, including calipers, micrometers, height gauges, bore gauges, and thread gauges with a high degree of precision.
  • Train production operators on basic quality checks, proper use of measurement equipment, and the importance of adhering to quality standards.
  • Analyze returned products (RMAs) to determine the cause of failure and provide detailed feedback to the engineering and manufacturing teams.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment within the quality lab and inspection areas, adhering to all 5S and safety protocols.
  • Collect, analyze, and report on quality data and key performance indicators (KPIs) such as defect rates, first pass yield, and scrap percentages.
  • Review and approve production-related documentation for accuracy and completeness, ensuring all quality checkpoints have been passed.

Secondary Functions

  • Support continuous improvement initiatives and Lean Manufacturing projects by providing data and hands-on assistance.
  • Assist in the maintenance and organization of the quality inspection lab, including inventory management of consumables.
  • Participate in cross-functional team meetings to represent the Quality department and provide input on product and process changes.
  • Provide feedback on the manufacturability of new designs based on inspection capabilities and tolerance limitations.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Blueprint Reading & GD&T: Proficient in interpreting complex engineering drawings with a strong working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (ANSI Y14.5).
  • Precision Measurement: Expertise in using a wide range of metrology tools, including digital calipers, micrometers, height gauges, indicators, and optical comparators.
  • CMM Operation: Hands-on experience operating a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM). Programming experience (e.g., PC-DMIS, Calypso) is a significant plus.
  • Quality Management Systems (QMS): Familiarity with QMS standards such as ISO 9001, AS9100, or IATF 16949.
  • Root Cause Analysis: Knowledge of problem-solving methodologies like 5-Why, 8D, and Fishbone (Ishikawa) diagrams.
  • Statistical Process Control (SPC): Understanding of basic SPC principles and the ability to use control charts and analyze process capability.
  • Computer Proficiency: Skilled in using Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook) for data entry, analysis, and reporting.
  • ERP/MRP Systems: Experience using enterprise resource planning software (e.g., SAP, Oracle) for quality functions like NCMR and inventory tracking.
  • Documentation: Ability to create clear, concise, and accurate inspection reports, work instructions, and non-conformance records.
  • Gauge Calibration: Experience with gauge management and calibration systems and procedures (Gage R&R).
  • Visual Inspection: Trained eye for detecting cosmetic defects, surface imperfections, and other visual anomalies against established standards.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
