Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute the complete installation, configuration, and commissioning of Land Mobile Radio (LMR) systems, including base stations, repeaters, antennas, and dispatch consoles.
  • Perform advanced diagnostics and troubleshooting on complex RF systems, identifying root causes of interference, signal degradation, and equipment failure using specialized test equipment.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance, performance testing, and system alignments on radio infrastructure to ensure maximum uptime and reliability for mission-critical communications.
  • Program, configure, and update firmware on a wide range of subscriber units, including portable and mobile radios from manufacturers like Motorola, Harris, and Kenwood.
  • Install and maintain in-building wireless enhancement systems, such as Bi-Directional Amplifiers (BDA) and Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS), to ensure seamless coverage.
  • Manage and resolve RF interference issues by utilizing spectrum analyzers and other diagnostic tools to locate and mitigate sources of conflicting signals.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation for all radio systems, including network diagrams, equipment inventories, configuration files, and maintenance logs.
  • Provide expert-level technical support and guidance to end-users and field personnel, resolving complex operational issues and providing informal training as needed.
  • Participate in the planning and design of new radio systems or upgrades to existing networks, contributing to RF coverage analysis, capacity planning, and equipment selection.
  • Perform bench-level repair and component-level diagnostics on subscriber units and infrastructure equipment that cannot be resolved in the field.
  • Conduct drive tests and field strength measurements to validate RF coverage models, identify dead spots, and optimize system performance post-deployment.
  • Ensure strict adherence to all Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations and other applicable standards for frequency licensing, equipment operation, and transmission parameters.
  • Install, terminate, and test various types of RF cabling and connectors, ensuring proper weatherproofing and adherence to industry best practices.
  • Manage the configuration and maintenance of microwave backhaul systems used to link remote radio sites, ensuring link stability and sufficient bandwidth.
  • Integrate radio systems with other communication platforms, such as VoIP telephony, IP networks, and dispatch logging recorders, ensuring seamless interoperability.
  • Respond to system outages and critical incidents on a 24/7 on-call basis, executing rapid recovery procedures to restore essential communication services.
  • Oversee the work of contractors and vendors during system installations or major repairs, ensuring work is completed to specification, on time, and within budget.
  • Develop and implement standardized procedures for radio equipment programming, installation, and maintenance to ensure consistency and quality across the organization.
  • Manage the lifecycle of radio assets, including tracking inventory, coordinating repairs, and planning for the eventual replacement of aging equipment.
  • Conduct tower site inspections, which may involve climbing towers, to assess the condition of antennas, transmission lines, and grounding systems.
  • Collaborate with IT and network security teams to ensure the security of IP-based radio systems and protect against unauthorized access or disruption.

Secondary Functions

  • Contribute to the development of training materials and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for radio system users and first-level support staff.
  • Participate in safety meetings and adhere to all organizational and industry safety protocols, especially when working at heights or with electrical systems.
  • Assist in the evaluation and procurement of new radio technology, test equipment, and software tools by providing technical insights and recommendations.
  • Provide detailed reports on system performance, incident resolutions, and project status to management and other stakeholders.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • RF Test Equipment Proficiency: Mastery of communication system analyzers (e.g., Aeroflex/Viavi, Anritsu), spectrum analyzers, wattmeters, and Time Domain Reflectometers (TDR).
  • LMR Systems Knowledge: Deep understanding of P25 (Phase I & II), DMR, TETRA, and conventional analog radio systems.
  • Subscriber Programming: Expertise in using Customer Programming Software (CPS) for major radio brands (e.g., Motorola MOTOTRBO, APX series).
  • Network & IP Skills: Solid understanding of TCP/IP networking principles as they apply to modern radio systems, including routers, switches, and firewalls.
  • Antenna & Transmission Line Theory: Comprehensive knowledge of antenna types, characteristics, and the installation and testing of RF transmission lines (e.g., heliax, LMR-400).
  • BDA/DAS Systems: Experience with the design, installation, and optimization of in-building public safety and cellular signal enhancement systems.
  • Microwave Backhaul: Familiarity with the installation, alignment, and maintenance of point-to-point and point-to-multipoint microwave links.
  • DC Power Systems: Knowledge of DC power plants, batteries, and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) used at communication sites.
  • FCC Regulations: Working knowledge of FCC rules and regulations, particularly Parts 90 and 101, pertaining to private land mobile radio services.
  • Technical Documentation: Ability to create and interpret technical drawings, system diagrams, and schematics.
  • Vehicle Installation: Skill in performing clean and durable installations of mobile radios, antennas, and associated wiring in a variety of vehicles.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, supplemented by a technical certification in electronics, telecommunications, or a related field (e.g., FCC General Radiotelephone Operator License (GROL), ETA-I certification).

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a relevant technical field.
