Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Greet patients in a courteous and professional manner, verify their identity using at least two patient identifiers, and confirm the scheduled imaging procedure.
- Obtain and meticulously document a thorough patient clinical history, including current symptoms, allergy information, and screening for contraindications such as pregnancy or metallic implants.
- Clearly explain imaging procedures to patients and their families in an understandable way, answering questions to alleviate anxiety and ensure their full cooperation and consent.
- Safely transport patients to, from, and within the radiology department using appropriate equipment like wheelchairs and stretchers, consistently employing proper body mechanics and safe patient handling techniques.
- Expertly assist Radiologic Technologists with patient positioning and transfers on and off the imaging table, ensuring patient safety, stability, and comfort throughout the process.
- Prepare examination rooms by ensuring they are clean, well-stocked with all necessary supplies (linens, contrast, etc.), and that all equipment is sanitized and fully functional for the next patient.
- Diligently monitor patients' physical and emotional well-being before, during, and after procedures, immediately reporting any adverse reactions or changes in condition to the technologist or nursing staff.
- Actively manage the flow of patients in waiting rooms and examination areas to minimize wait times, optimize departmental efficiency, and enhance the overall patient experience.
- Accurately enter, update, and manage patient data within the Radiology Information System (RIS) and Electronic Health Record (EHR), including scheduling, order verification, and exam status updates.
- Retrieve and organize patient records and prior imaging studies from the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) for comparison purposes by the reading Radiologist.
- Assist with the preparation and administration of oral and rectal contrast media under the direct supervision and guidance of a licensed technologist or radiologist.
- Perform a variety of clerical duties including answering multi-line telephones, directing calls, managing incoming faxes, scheduling patient appointments, and processing necessary paperwork.
- Maintain a consistent inventory of medical, linen, and clerical supplies, proactively ordering and restocking items as needed to prevent any disruption to clinical operations.
- Adhere strictly to all institutional and governmental safety protocols, including radiation safety (ALARA principles) and infection control standards, to protect both patients and staff.
- Chaperone patients of the opposite gender during examinations as requested, providing support while maintaining patient dignity and privacy at all times.
- Respond promptly and assist clinical staff during medical emergencies within the department, utilizing Basic Life Support (BLS) skills and other emergency protocols as trained.
- Thoroughly clean and disinfect imaging equipment and examination rooms between patients according to established institutional infection control policies and procedures.
- Assist with routine quality control procedures for imaging equipment and processors, accurately documenting results as required by departmental and regulatory standards.
- Facilitate clear and effective communication between the radiology department, referring physicians' offices, patient floors, and other hospital departments to ensure coordinated and timely patient care.
- Handle, label, and transport patient specimens (such as biopsy samples) to the laboratory in accordance with established protocols.
- Load and operate power injectors for contrast media administration under direct supervision, after completing appropriate institutional training and competency verification.
- Properly handle and dispose of sharps, biohazardous materials, and other regulated medical waste in accordance with institutional and OSHA guidelines.
Secondary Functions
- Assist with departmental quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives by collecting data, providing feedback, and participating in team-based projects.
- Participate actively in departmental staff meetings and in-service training sessions to stay current with new procedures, technologies, and safety policies.
- Contribute to the orientation and on-the-job training of new Radiology Assistants and other clinical support staff.
- Collaborate with the front desk and scheduling teams by providing basic clerical and administrative support during periods of high patient volume.
