Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Direct and oversee the safe movement of trains, ensuring adherence to all railroad rules, signals, and federal regulations (e.g., FRA, Transport Canada).
Take full responsibility for the train consist, including verifying car numbers, placement, tonnage, and length against the official train manifest and waybills.
Perform meticulous pre-departure air brake tests (Class I and Class IA) to ensure the entire train has functional and responsive braking capability.
Conduct thorough roll-by and walking inspections of trains to identify and report any defects such as sticking brakes, overheated bearings, flat wheels, or shifting loads.
Operate track switches, derails, and other fixed equipment to safely route the train within yards, on the main line, and at industrial sidings.
Physically couple and uncouple rail cars, which involves lifting heavy knuckles, connecting air hoses, and ensuring a secure connection between cars.
Communicate constantly and clearly with the Locomotive Engineer, providing precise instructions for starting, stopping, and controlling train speed, especially during switching or shoving movements.
Maintain continuous radio and signal communication with dispatchers and other train crews to report train position, receive track authorities, and coordinate movements.
Prepare, review, and manage all train-related paperwork and electronic documentation, including work orders, track warrants, hazardous materials manifests, and delay reports.
Supervise the securement of the train, crew, and equipment when a train is stopped, applying handbrakes as required by terrain and train length.
Get on and off stationary and moving equipment, riding on the side of cars as necessary during switching operations to guide movements and observe conditions.
