Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve comprehensive recycling, composting, and waste diversion programs to meet or exceed organizational and regulatory targets.
  • Conduct regular and thorough waste stream audits and characterization studies to identify contamination sources and opportunities for increased material diversion.
  • Manage and coordinate logistics with waste hauling vendors, material recovery facilities (MRFs), and other third-party service providers, including contract negotiation and performance monitoring.
  • Design and execute engaging educational and outreach campaigns, workshops, and training sessions for employees, residents, and stakeholders to promote program participation and proper sorting.
  • Monitor and ensure strict compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to solid waste, universal waste, and hazardous materials management (e.g., RCRA).
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret waste and recycling data to track key performance indicators (KPIs) such as diversion rates, contamination levels, and program costs.
  • Prepare and present detailed monthly, quarterly, and annual reports for senior leadership and regulatory agencies, summarizing program performance and providing strategic recommendations.
  • Manage the budget for recycling and waste management programs, including forecasting expenses, tracking invoices, and identifying cost-saving opportunities.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for all recycling-related inquiries, complaints, and feedback, providing timely and effective resolutions.
  • Research, evaluate, and pilot new technologies, collection methods, and innovative solutions to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of waste reduction efforts.
  • Oversee the procurement, inventory, and strategic placement of recycling bins, signage, and other essential program infrastructure.
  • Develop clear and accessible educational materials, including flyers, guides, website content, and social media posts, to communicate program guidelines.
  • Collaborate with facilities, operations, and procurement departments to integrate sustainability best practices and circular economy principles into daily operations.
  • Lead or serve as a key member of the organization's Green Team or Sustainability Committee to drive broader environmental initiatives.
  • Perform site inspections across facilities or throughout a community to ensure proper bin placement, clear signage, and adherence to program standards.
  • Coordinate and manage special waste collection events, such as for e-waste, household hazardous waste, or confidential document shredding.
  • Stay current on evolving market trends for recyclable commodities, industry best practices, and legislative changes affecting waste management.

  • Waste Stream Analysis: Proficiency in conducting waste audits, sorting materials, and characterizing waste composition.
  • Data Management & Reporting: Strong ability to track, analyze, and visualize data using spreadsheets (e.g., advanced Excel functions, pivot tables) and databases.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: In-depth understanding of local, state, and federal environmental regulations (e.g., RCRA, AB 341/1826 in California).
