Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Meticulously inspect and sort incoming waste streams to separate recyclables such as paper, cardboard, plastics, glass, and metals according to established quality standards.
Operate and perform routine maintenance on essential recycling equipment, including balers, compactors, shredders, and forklifts, to process materials efficiently and safely.
Maintain accurate and detailed daily logs of processed materials, including weights, types, and destinations, to support inventory management and compliance reporting.
Uphold strict adherence to all relevant environmental, health, and safety regulations, including those set by the EPA, OSHA, and DOT, to ensure a safe and compliant work environment.
Properly identify, label, handle, and store universal and hazardous waste materials in designated accumulation areas, following strict protocols for safe management and disposal.
Schedule and coordinate with third-party vendors for the timely pickup and transportation of processed recyclable materials, ensuring seamless logistics and accurate documentation.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, including the recycling dock, processing floor, and storage zones, to prevent accidents and improve operational flow.
Prepare and manage all necessary shipping documentation, such as Bills of Lading and waste manifests, for outbound shipments of recyclable and waste materials.
Conduct regular waste audits and characterization studies to identify contamination sources and discover new opportunities for improving waste diversion rates.
Conduct pre-operational safety checks and daily inspections on all powered industrial trucks and processing equipment to ensure they are in safe working order.
Routinely monitor recycling and waste containers throughout the facility, ensuring they are not overflowing and are being used correctly by personnel.
Actively engage with employees across different departments to champion the recycling program, answer questions, and encourage greater participation and awareness.
Proactively identify and report any non-conforming materials or process deviations to supervisors to maintain the quality and marketability of recyclable commodities.

Secondary Functions

Conduct training sessions and provide ongoing guidance to facility personnel on proper waste segregation, recycling procedures, and sustainability best practices.
Oversee the inventory of necessary supplies, such as collection bins, labels, spill kits, and personal protective equipment (PPE), and initiate reordering as needed.
Act as a key member of the spill response team for minor incidents related to waste handling, following established emergency and cleanup procedures.

Forklift Operation: Proficiency in operating a forklift and other powered industrial trucks; current certification is highly valued.
Equipment Operation & Maintenance: Experience running and performing minor maintenance on industrial recycling equipment like balers, compactors, and shredders.
Hazardous Waste Management: Training and experience in identifying, handling, and storing hazardous materials (e.g., HAZWOPER 24 or 40-hour certification).
