Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Execute all phases of vehicle surface preparation for refinishing, including thorough cleaning, sanding, filling, and application of appropriate primers and sealers to create an ideal substrate.
Skillfully operate computerized paint mixing systems to precisely formulate and tint colors, ensuring an imperceptible match to the vehicle's existing paint, including complex multi-stage finishes.
Masterfully apply primers, basecoats, and clearcoats using HVLP (High Volume, Low Pressure) and other advanced spray equipment, ensuring consistent film thickness and a flawless, defect-free finish.
Perform detailed finish work, including denibbing, sanding, buffing, and polishing, to remove any minor imperfections and achieve a showroom-quality gloss and texture.
Meticulously mask and tape off adjacent panels, trim, and glass to protect them from overspray, demonstrating precision and care for the entire vehicle.
Identify and troubleshoot paint defects such as runs, sags, orange peel, and fish eyes, and apply the correct techniques to rectify them efficiently.
Work from and interpret repair orders to understand the full scope of the refinish work required for each specific vehicle.
Manage the flow of vehicles through the paint department, coordinating with body technicians and detailers to maintain an efficient production schedule.
Utilize and maintain a variety of sanding tools, from DA sanders to sanding blocks, to achieve the correct surface profile for optimal paint adhesion.
Maintain a deep understanding of modern paint systems, including both solvent-borne and waterborne technologies, and adapt application techniques accordingly.
Ensure all refinish operations are completed to meet or exceed I-CAR and OEM quality standards for fit, finish, and durability.
Perform final inspection of the painted vehicle, ensuring all work is complete, masking is removed, and the finish meets the highest quality benchmarks before moving to reassembly or detail.

Secondary Functions

Perform routine cleaning, maintenance, and filter changes for all paint shop equipment, including spray booths, prep stations, and spray guns, to ensure a safe and efficient work environment.
Maintain a meticulous and organized inventory of all paints, primers, hardeners, and related refinishing supplies, and communicate ordering needs to the Parts or Shop Manager.
Strictly adhere to all local, state, and federal regulations regarding hazardous waste disposal and VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions.
Actively participate in ongoing training and certification programs (such as I-CAR or manufacturer-specific courses) to stay current with new products, techniques, and technologies.
Mentor and provide guidance to apprentice painters or painter's helpers, sharing knowledge and best practices to foster team development.
Collaborate closely with estimators to ensure all necessary refinish operations are included in the initial repair plan and to document any required supplements.
Maintain accurate logs and records of materials used for each job to ensure proper billing and cost tracking.
Champion a culture of safety by consistently using all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including respirators, eye protection, and protective suits.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

Post-secondary certificate or degree from a vocational or technical college in Automotive Collision Repair and Refinishing.
I-CAR ProLevel 1 (Refinish) certification or higher.
ASE B2-B5 (Painting & Refinishing) certification.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

2-5+ years of documented, hands-on experience as a refinish technician in a professional, high-production collision repair facility.
