Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Safely and professionally operate a commercial motor vehicle (typically Class A or B) to transport freight over a defined regional area, often spanning multiple states.
Execute timely pickup and delivery of goods, adhering strictly to pre-planned schedules and routes while dynamically adjusting to real-time traffic and weather conditions.
Conduct thorough and documented pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip inspections of the truck and trailer to ensure all equipment is safe, compliant, and fully operational.
Maintain meticulous and accurate electronic logs of driving hours, rest periods, and duty status in strict compliance with all Department of Transportation (DOT) Hours of Service (HOS) regulations.
Ensure the integrity and accuracy of all shipping documentation, including bills of lading, delivery receipts, and freight manifests, securing necessary signatures and notations.
Actively participate in the loading and unloading of cargo, which may involve manual lifting or the skilled operation of material handling equipment like pallet jacks and forklifts.
Properly secure all cargo for transport using approved devices and techniques, such as straps, chains, blocking, and bracing, to prevent shifting and damage during transit.
Maintain constant and professional communication with dispatch, providing regular updates on location, progress, and any potential delays or route deviations.
Serve as a front-line brand ambassador by providing exceptional, courteous, and professional customer service during all interactions at pickup and delivery locations.
Adhere to all federal, state, and local transportation regulations, as well as all company-specific safety policies and operational procedures without exception.
Skillfully navigate routes using GPS technology, paper maps, and written directions, proactively planning for potential obstacles and optimizing for efficiency.
Immediately report any vehicle defects, equipment malfunctions, accidents, or traffic violations to dispatch and the appropriate management personnel.
Manage and account for all trip-related expenses, including fuel, tolls, and maintenance, by collecting and submitting receipts in a timely manner.
Professionally address and facilitate the resolution of customer issues, discrepancies, or complaints that may arise at the point of delivery.
Maintain the cleanliness and general upkeep of the assigned vehicle, both interior and exterior, to project a professional image and ensure a safe working environment.
Operate the vehicle safely in a wide range of challenging weather and road conditions, from heavy urban traffic to rural and mountainous terrain.
Diligently verify the contents of shipments against shipping documents to ensure accuracy and prevent discrepancies before departure.
Manage a work schedule that regularly includes overnight travel and being away from home for several consecutive days or up to a week at a time.
Collaborate effectively with shipping and receiving personnel at various facilities to ensure smooth, efficient, and safe loading and unloading operations.
Participate actively in mandatory safety meetings, ongoing professional development, and periodic training sessions to stay current with regulations and best practices.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

Valid, state-issued Commercial Driver's License (CDL), typically Class A.
A clean Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) with a demonstrated history of safe driving.
Proficiency in operating Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) and other in-cab technology.
Demonstrated ability to safely operate material handling equipment, such as electric pallet jacks or forklifits.
Comprehensive knowledge of current DOT regulations, including Hours of Service (HOS) and cargo securement rules.
Practical skills in basic vehicle inspection and preventative maintenance.
Strong route planning and navigation abilities using GPS systems, digital maps, and traditional atlases.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

Certificate of completion from an accredited professional truck driving school or program.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

1-3 years of verifiable commercial driving experience.

Preferred:

2+ years of OTR (Over-the-Road) or regional commercial driving experience in a Class A vehicle, preferably with a record of safe and on-time deliveries. Experience with temperature-controlled or hazardous materials is a plus, where applicable.
