Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Directly assist Physical and Occupational Therapists with implementing patient treatment plans, ensuring precise execution of prescribed activities.
- Guide patients through therapeutic exercise programs, providing verbal cues, encouragement, and hands-on support to ensure proper form and safety.
- Facilitate patient mobility and functional activities, including transfers, ambulation, and gait training, utilizing proper body mechanics and assistive devices.
- Monitor patient vitals and responses during and after treatment sessions, promptly reporting any significant changes or concerns to the supervising therapist.
- Prepare patients for therapy sessions, which may include assisting with the application and removal of therapeutic modalities like hot/cold packs, ultrasound, or electrical stimulation units.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organized treatment area, ensuring all equipment is sanitized and prepared for each patient in accordance with infection control protocols.
- Provide clear and empathetic instruction to patients and their families regarding home exercise programs, as delegated by the therapist.
- Observe patient performance and progress closely, documenting objective data and qualitative observations to contribute to patient records.
- Actively participate in patient-related communication, fostering a supportive and motivating atmosphere to enhance the patient experience.
- Transport patients safely to and from the therapy department, ensuring their comfort and dignity throughout the process.
- Assist in fabricating, adjusting, or repairing adaptive equipment, splints, or braces under the direct guidance of the therapy professional.
- Manage the flow of patients within the clinic, ensuring a smooth transition between exercises and minimizing wait times to optimize the daily schedule.
Secondary Functions
- Perform essential administrative duties, including scheduling patient appointments, managing phone calls, and handling patient check-in and registration.
- Maintain and manage the inventory of therapy supplies and linens, placing orders as needed to prevent shortages.
- Ensure all therapeutic equipment is in good working order by performing routine cleaning, maintenance, and safety checks, and reporting any malfunctions.
- Accurately and confidentially manage patient records and charts, including filing, retrieving, and entering data into the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system.
- Prepare and organize patient documentation and charge sheets for the supervising therapist’s review and sign-off.
- Collaborate effectively with the interdisciplinary team, including nurses, physicians, and administrative staff, to ensure coordinated and holistic patient care.
- Participate actively in departmental meetings, in-service training, and continuing education opportunities to stay current with best practices.
- Uphold strict patient confidentiality at all times, adhering to HIPAA regulations and organizational policies.
- Assist in orienting and training new volunteers or junior aide staff within the rehabilitation department.
