Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute predictive maintenance (PdM) tasks, including collecting and analyzing data from vibration analysis, infrared thermography, oil analysis, and ultrasonic testing to assess equipment health.
  • Perform root cause analysis (RCA) on equipment failures and chronic issues to identify fundamental causes and develop effective, lasting corrective actions.
  • Utilize and maintain a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to document work orders, track asset history, manage condition-monitoring data, and report on key performance indicators.
  • Conduct precision mechanical tasks, including laser alignment of rotating equipment shafts and dynamic balancing of components like fans and rotors to minimize vibration and wear.
  • Develop and optimize preventive maintenance (PM) procedures and schedules based on failure data, equipment criticality, and reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) principles.
  • Calibrate, operate, and maintain a wide array of sophisticated diagnostic tools and test equipment used for condition monitoring and troubleshooting.
  • Interpret complex technical documentation, including P&IDs, electrical schematics, mechanical blueprints, and OEM manuals, to support maintenance and troubleshooting activities.
  • Lead or actively participate in Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) to proactively identify potential failure modes and implement mitigation strategies.
  • Monitor critical equipment parameters and performance trends, generating detailed reports and recommendations for the engineering and management teams.
  • Provide expert technical guidance and hands-on training to other maintenance technicians on reliability best practices, precision maintenance techniques, and new technologies.
  • Install and commission new and repaired equipment, ensuring it meets all operational specifications and reliability standards before being returned to service.
  • Conduct various non-destructive testing (NDT) methods, such as dye penetrant, magnetic particle, or ultrasonic thickness testing, to inspect for component defects.
  • Collaborate closely with operations and engineering departments to provide reliability-focused input on equipment modifications, upgrades, and new capital projects.
  • Manage and document the lubrication program, ensuring correct lubricants, application methods, and frequencies are used for all plant machinery.
  • Adhere to and champion all site safety protocols and procedures, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), confined space entry, and hot work, ensuring a safe work environment.
  • Investigate equipment performance issues by collecting and analyzing operational data to identify subtle changes that may indicate impending failure.

Secondary Functions

  • Support capital project teams by providing reliability input during the design, procurement, and commissioning phases of new equipment installations.
  • Assist in the management of the critical spare parts inventory, providing recommendations on stocking levels and component specifications.
  • Champion a site-wide culture of reliability and proactive maintenance by engaging with operators and other stakeholders.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives, such as Kaizen events, focused on enhancing maintenance processes and overall plant efficiency.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Vibration Analysis: Proficiency in collecting and interpreting vibration data to diagnose faults in rotating machinery (bearings, gears, imbalances). Level I or II certification is highly valued.
  • Infrared Thermography: Skill in using thermal imagers to detect electrical and mechanical anomalies, with an understanding of emissivity and reflection.
  • Root Cause Analysis (RCA): Formal training and practical experience with methodologies such as 5-Whys, Fishbone Diagrams, or Apollo RCA.
  • CMMS Proficiency: Advanced user-level experience with enterprise systems like SAP-PM, Maximo, or Oracle eAM for work order management and data analysis.
  • Precision Alignment & Balancing: Hands-on expertise with laser alignment tools and dynamic balancing equipment.
  • Oil Analysis & Lubrication: Knowledge of lubricant properties, sampling techniques, and interpretation of oil analysis reports to assess machine and fluid health.
  • Blueprint & Schematic Reading: Ability to fluently read and interpret complex mechanical, electrical, and P&ID drawings.
  • Non-Destructive Testing (NDT): Familiarity with the principles and application of methods like UT, PT, and MT.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED combined with a technical certificate in a relevant field or a completed apprenticeship program.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate of Science (A.S.) or technical degree in a related discipline.

Relevant Fields of Study:

  • Industrial Maintenance Technology
  • Mechatronics or Electromechanical Technology
  • Mechanical Engineering Technology

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 3-7 years of hands-on experience in an industrial maintenance role within a manufacturing, power generation, or similar heavy industry environment.

Preferred: Demonstrable experience specifically focused on predictive maintenance technologies (vibration, thermal, etc.) and reliability improvement programs. Certifications such as CMRT (Certified Maintenance & Reliability Technician) are a significant asset.
