Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Provide compassionate, low-stress, and effective restraint for a wide variety of animals during examinations, treatments, and procedures to ensure the safety of both the patient and the veterinary team.
Assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians with physical examinations by gathering patient history, recording vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration), and documenting all findings accurately in the electronic or paper medical record.
Prepare and sterilize surgical suites, instruments, drapes, and gowns, ensuring strict adherence to aseptic techniques before, during, and after surgical procedures.
Monitor anesthetized patients, tracking vital signs such as heart rate, respiratory rate, and temperature, and promptly communicating any changes or concerns to the supervising veterinarian or technician.
Skillfully collect and prepare laboratory samples, including blood (venipuncture), urine (cystocentesis, free catch), and fecal samples, for in-house analysis or shipment to external laboratories.
Perform a range of in-house diagnostic tests, such as SNAP tests (e.g., FeLV/FIV, Heartworm), fecal flotations, urinalysis with sediment examination, and ear cytology, and accurately record the results.
Accurately dispense and administer medications (oral, topical, injectable) and treatments as prescribed by the veterinarian, ensuring clients understand proper dosage and administration instructions.
Assist in radiographic procedures by properly positioning patients for diagnostic imaging, utilizing appropriate safety protocols and personal protective equipment (PPE).
Provide dedicated nursing care for hospitalized patients, including feeding, walking, monitoring comfort levels, administering treatments, and maintaining the cleanliness of their kennels and enclosures.
Educate clients on various aspects of animal health and wellness, including preventative care, parasite control, nutrition, post-operative care instructions, and basic behavioral advice.
Triage incoming patients and phone calls, differentiating between routine appointments and urgent or emergency situations, and providing clear, calm guidance to pet owners.
Maintain a clean, sanitary, and well-organized hospital environment, including exam rooms, treatment areas, surgical suites, and kennels, to control disease and ensure a professional appearance.
Prepare and explain treatment plan estimates to clients, ensuring they have a clear understanding of the proposed procedures, associated costs, and available payment options.
Assist with client communication by relaying information from the veterinarian, providing patient updates, and making follow-up calls to check on patients post-visit or post-procedure.
Manage the admission and discharge of patients for appointments, surgeries, and hospital stays, ensuring all necessary paperwork is completed and client questions are answered thoroughly.
Perform dental prophylaxis support tasks, including charting dental findings, assisting with ultrasonic scaling and polishing, and taking dental radiographs under the supervision of a veterinarian or technician.
Place intravenous (IV) catheters and set up fluid therapy as directed, monitoring flow rates and the patient's status throughout the treatment.
Provide compassionate support to clients during difficult times, including euthanasia procedures, demonstrating empathy and professionalism.
Adapt quickly to different clinic software systems (e.g., Cornerstone, Avimark, ezyVet) for scheduling, invoicing, and maintaining patient medical records.
Ensure all controlled substances are logged accurately and handled in accordance with DEA regulations and clinic protocols.

Secondary Functions

Manage and maintain inventory of pharmaceuticals, pet food, and medical supplies, tracking stock levels, placing orders, and unpacking and organizing shipments.
Contribute to maintaining and updating the clinic's client education library, including handouts, website information, and social media content related to pet health.
Perform routine maintenance on clinic equipment, such as anesthesia machines, autoclaves, and laboratory instruments, to ensure proper function and longevity.
Assist front desk and reception staff during peak times by answering phones, scheduling appointments, and processing payments to ensure smooth clinic flow.
