Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Act as a Key Worker for specific children, taking lead responsibility for coordinating their care plans, personalising their support, and ensuring their individual needs are met.
  • Provide a safe, therapeutic, and nurturing living environment by establishing clear boundaries, consistent routines, and positive, trusting relationships with the young people.
  • Actively safeguard and promote the welfare of all children, demonstrating a robust understanding of child protection policies and immediately reporting any concerns in line with established procedures.
  • Implement and regularly review individualised care plans, risk assessments, and behavior management strategies in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Support young people in their daily living routines, including personal hygiene, meal preparation, school attendance, and age-appropriate chores to develop their independence and life skills.
  • Effectively manage complex and challenging behaviors, utilizing de-escalation techniques and approved therapeutic interventions to ensure the safety of the individual and others.
  • Administer prescribed medication in strict accordance with CQC regulations, company policies, and the child’s specific healthcare plan, maintaining meticulous records.
  • Maintain high-quality, detailed, and accurate written records, including daily logs, incident reports, and progress notes, ensuring they are completed in a timely and professional manner.
  • Champion the educational and personal development of each child, providing homework support, liaising with schools, and encouraging participation in hobbies and leisure activities.
  • Facilitate and transport young people to and from school, contact sessions, appointments, and social activities using a company vehicle where required.
  • Undertake practical domestic duties such as cooking nutritious meals, cleaning, and laundry to help maintain the home to a high standard and model a positive home life.
  • Build and maintain professional, collaborative relationships with external agencies, including social workers, CAMHS, police, and educational professionals.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Level 3/4 Diploma for Residential Childcare (or equivalent), or a firm commitment to complete it within a specified timeframe.
  • Safeguarding & Child Protection: In-depth knowledge of relevant legislation (e.g., The Children Act 1989) and local safeguarding procedures.
  • Report Writing & Record Keeping: Ability to write clear, concise, and objective reports and maintain accurate daily logs.
  • Behavior Management Techniques: Training and experience in de-escalation and therapeutic crisis intervention (e.g., TCI, MAPA).
  • First Aid & Medication Administration: Certification in paediatric first aid and experience in safely administering medication.
  • Full, Clean UK Driving Licence: Often essential for transporting young people.
  • IT Proficiency: Competent in using Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook) and digital care planning systems.
  • Understanding of Therapeutic Models: Knowledge of frameworks like PACE (Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity, Empathy), Attachment Theory, or Trauma-Informed Care.
  • Risk Assessment: Ability to identify, assess, and mitigate risks related to individuals and the environment.
  • Knowledge of Ofsted Regulations: Familiarity with the standards and inspection framework for Children's Homes.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma (or equivalent, e.g., GCSEs in Maths and English).
  • A willingness to enroll in and complete the Level 3/4 Diploma for Residential Childcare.

Preferred Education:

  • Level 3 or Level 4 Diploma for Residential Childcare (or equivalent social care qualification).
  • A degree in a relevant field.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 6 months - 3+ years in a relevant care or support setting. Some entry-level positions may be available for candidates with the right personal qualities.

  • Prior experience working directly with children or young people in a residential care, secure unit, or therapeutic setting.
  • Demonstrable experience supporting individuals with Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties (EBD), learning disabilities, autism, or trauma backgrounds.
  • Experience working shifts, including sleep-ins, in a 24/7 care environment.
