Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Meticulously read and interpret complex blueprints, drawings, and architectural plans to understand project specifications, layouts, and dimensions.
  • Precisely measure, cut, shape, and assemble lumber and other wood materials to construct residential building frames, including walls, floors, and roof systems.
  • Expertly erect pre-cut and site-cut wall frames, ensuring they are plumb, level, and square according to project plans and industry best practices.
  • Install floor joists, rim joists, and sub-flooring materials, creating a stable and secure foundation for subsequent construction phases.
  • Construct and install roof trusses and rafters, sheathing, and fascia, ensuring proper alignment and structural integrity for roofing installation.
  • Verify the accuracy of all structural alignments and dimensions using levels, plumb bobs, framing squares, and laser measurement tools.
  • Operate a wide array of hand and power tools safely and efficiently, including pneumatic nail guns, circular saws, miter saws, reciprocating saws, and drills.
  • Frame openings for windows and doors with precision, ensuring correct rough opening sizes and structural support as per manufacturer specifications.
  • Adhere strictly to all local, state, and federal building codes and regulations to ensure all work passes inspection.
  • Proactively identify and correct any structural defects or deviations from the project plans in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate effectively with other construction professionals, including electricians, plumbers, and HVAC technicians, to coordinate workflow and avoid conflicts.
  • Perform physically demanding tasks in various weather conditions, including lifting heavy materials, climbing ladders and scaffolding, and prolonged standing or kneeling.
  • Install blocking, backing, and other structural supports as needed for fixtures, cabinets, and drywall installation.
  • Secure all structural components using a variety of fasteners, including nails, screws, bolts, and anchors, ensuring robust and lasting connections.
  • Maintain a keen eye for detail to ensure the highest level of craftsmanship and quality in all completed framework.
  • Follow and enforce all company and OSHA safety protocols on the job site to prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Manage and maintain tools and equipment, performing routine checks and reporting any malfunctions or needs for repair.
  • Assist in the layout of building foundations, including plate lines and anchor bolt locations, to ensure a precise start to the framing process.
  • Read and adhere to cut sheets and material lists to minimize waste and ensure efficient use of resources.
  • Participate in job site cleanup, organizing materials and maintaining a hazard-free work environment for the entire crew.
  • Install exterior sheathing (like OSB or plywood) on walls and roofs to enclose the structure and prepare it for weatherproofing.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to junior framers and carpenter apprentices, sharing knowledge and promoting skill development within the team.

  • Provide on-the-fly measurements and material counts as requested by the site supervisor or project manager.
  • Provide feedback on construction processes and material usage to improve project efficiency and future planning.
  • Work closely with project managers and other trade partners to ensure seamless project flow and resolve on-site issues.
  • Engage in daily safety huddles and weekly planning meetings to review progress, identify potential roadblocks, and coordinate tasks with the crew.

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Blueprint Interpretation: Advanced ability to read, understand, and execute work based on architectural and structural plans.
  • Rough Carpentry & Wood Framing: Expertise in all aspects of wood-frame construction, from floor joists to roof rafters.
  • Power Tool Proficiency: Mastery of framing-specific power tools, including nail guns, circular saws, and miter saws, with a strong emphasis on safety.
  • Advanced Measuring Skills: Precision in using tape measures, lasers, levels, and framing squares for accurate layouts and cuts.
  • Knowledge of Building Codes: Strong working knowledge of local and international residential building codes (IRC).

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 2-5+ years of hands-on experience in residential wood framing.

Preferred: Demonstrable experience as a key member of a framing crew on multiple residential projects, from standard tract homes to complex custom builds. Experience leading small teams or mentoring apprentices is a significant plus.
