A Restaurant Wait Staff Server is the primary ambassador of the dining experience. Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Greet and welcome guests with genuine warmth upon seating, presenting menus and introducing daily specials with enthusiasm.
  • Develop an encyclopedic knowledge of the menu, including ingredients, preparation methods, and potential allergens, to answer guest questions confidently.
  • Provide personalized recommendations for food and beverages, guiding guests through the menu to enhance their dining experience.
  • Accurately take food and beverage orders from guests and enter them into the Point of Sale (POS) system promptly and without error.
  • Serve courses from the kitchen and beverages from the bar, ensuring proper timing and presentation for each item.
  • Proactively monitor and observe diners' experiences to anticipate needs, such as drink refills, extra condiments, or clearing of plates.
  • Skillfully coordinate with kitchen and bar staff to ensure a synchronized and efficient flow of service to all tables.
  • Address any guest concerns or complaints with patience and professionalism, escalating to management only when necessary to find a satisfactory resolution.
  • Manage table turnover effectively by pacing the meal, processing payments efficiently, and preparing the table for the next guests.
  • Process all guest payments, including cash, credit card, and gift card transactions, with accuracy and adherence to financial protocols.
  • Perform suggestive selling and upselling of menu items, such as appetizers, desserts, and premium beverages, to increase check averages.
  • Maintain a constant presence on the dining floor, remaining visible and approachable to guests and fellow team members.
  • Build rapport with guests to create a loyal customer base, remembering regulars and their preferences.
  • Communicate special guest requests, dietary restrictions, and allergies clearly to the kitchen staff to ensure guest safety and satisfaction.
  • Offer a sincere thank you to all guests upon their departure, inviting them to return for another memorable experience.

Secondary Functions

  • Meticulously perform all opening and closing side-work duties, including restocking service stations, cleaning, and prepping for the next shift.
  • Ensure all tables are set to the restaurant's standards before seating, including polished silverware, clean glassware, and proper place settings.
  • Assist the host team with seating guests, managing waitlists, and answering the phone during peak service hours as needed.
  • Support busser staff by assisting with the clearing and resetting of tables to maintain a clean and inviting dining room.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and organization of all service stations, wait stations, and dining areas throughout the shift.
  • Attend mandatory pre-shift and team meetings to stay informed about menu changes, daily specials, and service priorities.
  • Adhere strictly to all state and local food safety regulations, sanitation guidelines, and responsible alcohol service laws.
  • Polish glassware and silverware to ensure they are spotless and ready for guest use.
  • Collaborate with the entire restaurant team to ensure a smooth and successful service, offering help to colleagues whenever possible.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Point of Sale (POS) System Proficiency: Experience operating modern POS systems such as Toast, Aloha, Micros, or Square for order entry and payment processing.
  • Menu Memorization & Knowledge: Ability to quickly learn and recall detailed information about menu items, ingredients, and daily specials.
  • Tray Service Techniques: Proper handling and carrying of large trays of food and drinks safely and gracefully through a busy dining room.
  • Cash Handling & Financial Acuity: Accurately handling cash transactions, making change, and processing credit card payments securely.
  • Food Safety & Sanitation: Knowledge of fundamental food safety standards and sanitation practices (ServSafe certification is a plus).

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate or coursework in Hospitality, Food and Beverage Service, or a related field.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 0-3 years of experience in a customer-facing role.

Preferred: 1+ years of direct experience as a server in a full-service dining restaurant environment is highly desirable.
