Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Operate a point-of-sale (POS) terminal to accurately and efficiently process customer transactions, including scanning merchandise and totaling purchases.
- Handle and process multiple forms of payment such as cash, credit/debit cards, gift cards, and digital/mobile payments in accordance with company policies.
- Issue receipts, refunds, credits, or change due to customers meticulously, ensuring transaction accuracy.
- Greet customers as they approach the checkout area and provide a friendly, positive, and efficient checkout experience.
- Answer customer questions regarding products, services, store policies, and ongoing promotions or sales events.
- Maintain a high level of product knowledge to assist customers and accurately process items, especially those without barcodes.
- Process customer returns and exchanges by inspecting merchandise and following established store procedures for refunds and restocking.
- Proactively promote and enroll customers in the company's loyalty program, explaining its benefits and features.
- Engage in upselling and cross-selling by suggesting complementary products, impulse buys, or special offers at the point of sale.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and well-stocked checkout station, including bags, receipt paper, and other necessary supplies.
- Count and balance the cash drawer at the beginning and end of each shift, ensuring it reconciles with the POS transaction report.
- Adhere strictly to all cash handling procedures and security protocols to prevent losses and discrepancies.
- Resolve customer complaints and issues calmly and effectively, escalating more complex problems to a supervisor or manager when necessary.
- Bag, box, or wrap customer purchases carefully to prevent damage and ensure ease of transport.
- Remain vigilant for signs of theft or fraud and report any suspicious activity to management or loss prevention personnel.
- Assist in keeping the front-end of the store, including entranceways and checkout lanes, tidy and presentable.
- Handle special transactions, such as tax-exempt sales, employee discounts, or large-volume purchases, following specific guidelines.
- Communicate effectively with other team members, including floor staff and managers, to verify prices or check stock.
- Follow all safety and sanitation guidelines, particularly when handling food items or cleaning checkout areas.
- Stay informed about new products, store layouts, and policy changes to provide accurate information to customers.
- Perform basic POS system troubleshooting or report system errors to the appropriate technical support or management staff.
