Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop comprehensive pre-season merchandise financial plans, including sales, margin, and inventory, at the division, department, and class level, ensuring alignment with top-down company financial targets.
  • Create and manage the Open-to-Buy (OTB) in-season, meticulously tracking performance against plan and making data-driven recommendations to the buying team to capitalize on trends and mitigate risks.
  • Formulate detailed sales and inventory forecasts by item and location, using historical data, market trends, and promotional calendars to ensure optimal stock levels.
  • Conduct in-depth analysis of key performance indicators (KPIs) such as sales, gross margin, inventory turn, and sell-through, providing actionable insights and weekly business recaps to cross-functional partners.
  • Strategize and execute markdown and promotional plans to drive sales, manage aging inventory, and protect overall margin goals.
  • Collaborate closely with the buying and merchandising teams to build balanced assortments that reflect financial plans and meet customer demand.
  • Manage the flow and allocation of new and replenishment inventory across all channels (e.g., retail stores, e-commerce) to optimize stock-to-sales ratios and minimize out-of-stocks.
  • Perform robust "what-if" scenario planning to model the potential financial impact of various merchandising strategies, promotions, or market shifts.
  • Lead monthly and quarterly forecast review meetings with leadership, presenting a clear analysis of business performance and revised projections.
  • Analyze category and product performance to identify growth opportunities, underperforming items, and emerging trends to inform future assortment strategies.
  • Reconcile top-down financial goals with bottom-up, category-level plans to ensure a cohesive and achievable business strategy.
  • Develop and maintain sophisticated planning tools, models, and reports to enhance forecasting accuracy and business visibility.
  • Partner with allocation analysts to develop and refine allocation strategies that support store-level sales plans and unique market needs.
  • Monitor and report on the lifecycle of products, from launch to peak, decline, and exit, recommending appropriate actions at each stage.
  • Re-forecast business in-season based on current performance and trends, adjusting sales, inventory, and margin plans to proactively manage the business.

Secondary Functions

  • Collaborate with supply chain and logistics partners to ensure inventory flow aligns with merchandise plans and promotional timelines.
  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis to answer critical business questions from leadership and cross-functional teams.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of planning processes, systems, and tools by identifying opportunities for increased efficiency and accuracy.
  • Participate in sprint planning and agile ceremonies if working within a data-centric or tech-forward retail environment.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to junior members of the planning team, such as Assistant Planners or Allocation Analysts.
  • Partner with marketing to ensure promotional activities are supported with adequate inventory and to analyze the ROI of marketing spend.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced Microsoft Excel: Mastery of complex formulas, pivot tables, v-lookups, macros, and financial modeling is essential.
  • Merchandise Planning Systems: Proficiency with industry-standard planning software (e.g., JDA, Oracle RPAS, Aptos, Anaplan, Blue Yonder).
  • Open-to-Buy (OTB) Management: Deep understanding and practical application of OTB principles to manage inventory investment.
  • Retail Math & Financial Acumen: Strong command of retail metrics (sell-through, gross margin, turn, GMROI) and financial planning concepts.
  • Data Analysis & Reporting: Ability to synthesize large datasets into clear, actionable insights and compelling business summaries.
  • Forecasting Methodologies: Experience with statistical and qualitative forecasting techniques for demand and sales planning.
  • SQL / Database Querying: Experience in pulling and manipulating data from databases is a significant advantage.
