Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Manage the complete, end-to-end monthly revenue close process, ensuring all revenue-generating activities are accurately captured and reported in a timely manner.
  • Perform meticulous reviews of sales contracts, statements of work (SOWs), and purchase orders to identify non-standard terms and ensure revenue is recognized in strict accordance with ASC 606 and company policies.
  • Prepare, review, and post complex journal entries related to revenue, deferred revenue, contract assets/liabilities, and accounts receivable.
  • Maintain and reconcile all revenue-related balance sheet accounts, including deferred revenue waterfalls, unbilled receivables, and contract cost assets, providing detailed supporting schedules.
  • Conduct in-depth monthly and quarterly variance analysis of revenue and deferred revenue, comparing actual results to forecasts and historical trends, and providing insightful commentary to management.
  • Act as a key business partner to the Sales, Legal, and Professional Services teams, providing proactive guidance on the revenue recognition implications of proposed contract structures.
  • Assist in the design, implementation, and maintenance of a robust internal control framework over the quote-to-cash cycle to ensure Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) compliance.
  • Calculate, accrue, and manage the amortization of sales commissions and other contract acquisition costs in line with ASC 606 guidelines.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for external and internal auditors, preparing detailed Provided by Client (PBC) schedules and fielding inquiries related to revenue transactions and processes.
  • Participate actively in the implementation, maintenance, and optimization of ERP and revenue management systems (e.g., NetSuite ARM, Zuora RevPro, SAP) to drive automation and efficiency.
  • Research and document the accounting treatment for new or unique product offerings and revenue streams, drafting technical accounting memos to support conclusions.
  • Analyze and monitor billing system data and accounts receivable aging to ensure the integrity of revenue data and support the collections team.
  • Assist in the preparation of revenue-related disclosures for external financial reporting, including SEC filings (10-Q and 10-K).
  • Develop and maintain key performance indicators (KPIs) and operational metrics for the revenue cycle, presenting findings to finance leadership.
  • Perform and update the company's standalone selling price (SSP) analysis to support the proper allocation of transaction prices across multiple performance obligations.
  • Collaborate with the FP&A team by providing key inputs for revenue forecasting, budgeting, and long-range planning.
  • Act as the go-to subject matter expert on revenue accounting, providing training and support to other departments to foster a broader understanding of revenue principles.
  • Review and process credit memos, revenue adjustments, and cancellations, ensuring they are accounted for correctly and have the proper level of approval.
  • Manage the specific accounting requirements for diverse revenue models, including SaaS, subscription, usage-based, and professional services revenue.
  • Continuously identify opportunities for process improvement within the revenue cycle to shorten the close timeline, enhance accuracy, and improve scalability.

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis from management and business partners.
  • Contribute to the organization's broader data governance and financial systems strategy.
  • Collaborate with business units to translate data needs into engineering and system requirements for the finance tech stack.
  • Participate in sprint planning and agile ceremonies within the finance and accounting teams for project-based work.
  • Assist with special projects, such as M&A due diligence or system migrations, as they relate to revenue streams and accounting.
  • Mentor junior accounting staff or interns on revenue accounting principles and best practices.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • ASC 606 Expertise: Deep, practical understanding of revenue recognition standards (ASC 606/IFRS 15) and the ability to apply them to complex scenarios.
  • ERP Proficiency: Hands-on experience with major ERP systems such as NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, or Microsoft Dynamics.
  • Revenue Automation Tools: Familiarity with dedicated revenue management software (e.g., Zuora RevPro, Oracle RMCS, NetSuite ARM) is a strong plus.
  • Advanced Excel: Mastery of Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, complex nested formulas, VLOOKUP/HLOOKUP, INDEX/MATCH, and data modeling.
  • SOX & Internal Controls: Solid understanding of internal control concepts and experience working in a SOX-compliant environment.
  • Technical Accounting: Ability to research accounting guidance and write clear, concise technical accounting memorandums.
  • Reconciliation: Proven ability to perform complex account reconciliations and resolve discrepancies methodically.
  • Financial Reporting: Experience with preparing schedules and disclosures for external financial reporting (10-K, 10-Q).

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 2-5 years of progressive accounting experience.

Preferred: A background in public accounting ("Big 4" or a large national firm) is highly desirable. A combination of public accounting and industry experience, particularly within a technology, SaaS, or subscription-based business, is considered a significant asset.
