Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Safely and efficiently operate a company-provided commercial vehicle (such as a box truck or step van) in strict accordance with all DOT regulations and company safety policies.
  • Meticulously load, transport, and deliver items to a diverse range of clients or businesses in a safe, timely, and professional manner, ensuring the integrity of the product throughout the entire delivery cycle.
  • Follow a pre-planned route schedule with precision, utilizing navigation tools and logistical software to optimize for traffic, weather conditions, and delivery windows.
  • Provide exceptional front-line customer service during deliveries, professionally addressing customer questions, concerns, and requests to ensure a positive experience.
  • Accurately verify delivery contents against shipping documents (invoices, manifests), obtaining necessary signatures, and collecting payments where required.
  • Utilize handheld electronic devices and scanners to accurately track deliveries, manage inventory, capture digital proof of delivery, and process customer transactions.
  • Perform thorough pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, meticulously documenting and reporting any mechanical issues, damages, or necessary repairs to the fleet manager.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and general upkeep of the assigned delivery vehicle, both interior and exterior, to present a professional company image.
  • Handle the physical demands of the job, which includes repeatedly lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling packages that may weigh up to 50-75 pounds.
  • Adhere to assigned delivery time windows and communicate proactively with dispatch or management regarding any delays, route deviations, or delivery issues.
  • Manage and account for all returned products, undeliverable packages, and related paperwork, ensuring they are returned to the distribution center correctly.
  • Review and prepare all necessary delivery paperwork, ensuring accuracy and completeness before starting the daily route.
  • Securely handle all collected payments (cash, checks, credit card slips) and reconcile them at the end of the shift according to company procedures.
  • Foster and maintain strong professional relationships with customers on the route, becoming a trusted and reliable point of contact for the company.
  • Navigate a variety of terrains and delivery locations, including busy urban centers, residential neighborhoods, and commercial loading docks.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with the loading and unloading of trucks and the sorting and staging of products within the warehouse during downtime or as needed.
  • Provide valuable feedback to the logistics and sales teams regarding route efficiency, customer needs, potential sales opportunities, or competitor activity.
  • Participate in mandatory safety meetings, training programs, and driver development workshops to stay current on best practices and regulations.

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Commercial Vehicle Operation: Proven ability to safely operate commercial vehicles (e.g., 16-26 ft. box trucks, step vans), including proficiency in backing, docking, and navigating tight spaces.
  • DOT Regulations: A strong working knowledge of Department of Transportation (DOT) rules, Hours of Service (HOS) regulations, and safe driving practices.
  • Route Planning & Navigation: Skill in using GPS devices, navigation apps (e.g., Google Maps, Waze), and routing software to efficiently manage a multi-stop route.
  • Material Handling: Competency in using material handling equipment such as hand trucks, dollies, and pallet jacks to safely move heavy items.
  • Technology Proficiency: Experience using handheld scanners, mobile printers, and delivery management applications for tracking, proof of delivery, and communication.
  • Vehicle Inspection: The ability to conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and identify potential maintenance or safety issues.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • A valid, non-expired state-issued Driver’s License.
  • A clean driving record with no major traffic violations in the past 3-5 years.

Preferred Education:

  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) - Class B or C, depending on vehicle type.
  • Certification in Defensive Driving or Professional Truck Driving.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 1-3 years of professional driving experience in a commercial or delivery capacity.
